German diplomat urges Ukraine to give up dream of NATO
Ukraine should not aspire to join NATO. It does not have to be a member of the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance at all
This was the call made by the head of the Munich Security Conference, German diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger, the PolitExpert portal has said.
He noted that it would be possible to follow Finland’s example: the country is a member of the EU but does not aspire to join NATO. For Ukraine, as well as for the whole of Europe, this is a rather acute issue. The West uses it as a springboard to get closer to Russia’s borders. Kiev would do well to understand that it is being used as a tool and not to succumb to provocations.
Ishenger said at the same time that persistent rumours about a Russian attack on Ukraine were not credible. There is no sense in the Russian Federation invading a neighbouring state. In addition, he called for stopping the aggravation of relations with Moscow by such actions and to establish a dialogue with it.
