FT: Washington manages to convince Europe of danger of Russian “attack” on Ukraine

The United States has been trying for weeks through diplomatic engagement to convince European countries that Russia is allegedly preparing to “invade” Ukraine, the Financial Times has reported

According to the paper’s sources, the United States tried to change the opinion of sceptical countries, including Germany, regarding the possibility of a Russian attack on Ukrainian territory. The Financial Times reported that Washington had circulated material on “the Kremlin’s alleged intentions” to 29 North Atlantic Alliance allies and diplomatic channels in the European Union.

“Many allies were not sure something serious was going on. We were surprised by this gap [in intelligence]. How and why did the US see something we didn’t? Some European states called for avoiding confrontation with Russia, but the US intelligence data changed their position”, –  the source said.

The head of Rossotrudnichestvo, Yevhen Primakov, said in his Telegram channel that the United States’ efforts to convince Europe that Russia was preparing an “attack” on Ukraine might be due to the fact that Washington had information about Kiev’s plans to attack. In his view, it could also be linked to the preparation of all “concessionaires for Kiev’s formal rejection of the Minsk agreements”.

“And since the Ukrainians lost their subjectivity long ago, the US not only knows, but ‘more than that’. And they are diligently building positions whereby any probable Russian response to such an attack (followed by a final resolution of the Donbass issue) will be declared exactly Russian aggression”, –  Primakov writes.
