Kishida: Japan is interested in comprehensive development of relations with Russia

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that Tokyo will seek to fully develop relations with Russian Federation

“With Russia, we will seek to develop relations comprehensively as part of our position – resolving the territorial issue and concluding a peace treaty”, –  Kishida said in his keynote speech at the opening of an extraordinary session of parliament.

The Prime Minister also noted that Japan intends to use the principle of firm diplomacy with neighboring countries, based on national interests and aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the region.

It should be recalled that Russia and Japan have been consulting for many years over the conclusion of a peace treaty as a result of the Second World War. One of the main obstacles to its conclusion has been disagreement over the rights to the southern part of the Kuril Islands. Japan continues to dispute ownership of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and a group of smaller islands.
