Pokémon BDSP: How To Get (& Use) A Flame Orb | Screen Rant
The Flame Orb is a unique item in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl that is held in battle and actually burns the Pokémon holding it. Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl introduced the Flame Orb in their original release along with an array of items never seen before in Pokémon. In fact, the diverse item selection available to trainers and Pokémon alike is one of the things that made the fourth generation games stand out from others. The Flame Orb makes an appearance once more in the remakes, and quality of life changes included in Pokémon BDSP make it a highly desirable item.
Changes that are in Pokémon BDSP make the Flame Orb a much easier item to use. The Flame Orb inflicts the burn status effect on its wielder at the end of the first turn, and whenever a Pokémon is burned it has a reduced Attack stat. Furthermore, the original Diamond and Pearl games saw any burned Pokémon lose 1/8th of its max HP at the end of each turn, severely limiting the potential of the Guts ability. The Guts ability increases the Attack stat of Pokémon with a status condition and negates the normal Attack stat drop of the burn effect.
In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, any burned Pokémon now only loses 1/16th of its max HP per turn. Although the Guts ability isn't typically seen on Pokémon in the best competitive teams in BDSP, Pokémon like Ursaring or Swellow are much easier to manage in a battle because their Attack stat is increased by 50% in exchange for a small chunk of health each turn. Additionally, with the move Facade, any Pokémon under a burned, poisoned, or paralyzed condition has this attack's base power doubled. Facade normally has a base power of 70, but with a burned Ursaring or Swellow with the Guts ability Facade will have a base attack power of 140, in addition to the 50% increase Attack stat of the Pokémon and their STAB bonus for being Normal-type Pokémon using a Normal-type move.
Trainers can only get a Flame Orb after beating the Elite Four and receiving the National Dex in Pokémon BDSP. After receiving the National Dex, visit the Battle Park and win enough rounds at the Battle Tower to receive 16 BP. The Flame Orb can be purchased through the left side exchange counter within the Battle Tower.
The only Pokémon unaffected by the Flame Orb's effect in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are Fire-type Pokémon. Furthermore, a Pokémon that knows the move Fling can throw the Flame Orb at an opponent to inflict damage and the burn effect as well. Be careful with this move, however, because any item used with Fling is lost forever outside of online trainer battles.
Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are available on Nintendo Switch.
