Queen’s Park 0 Ayr United 3

Queen's youngsters lose out to a well organised and clinical Ayr United in CAS Performance League .

Queen’s played Ayr United at a cold but dry Toryglen on Friday night. The young Spiders had played Ayr earlier in the season, winning 1-0 at Cumnock.

For the first ten minutes both sides battled to dominate the game. Ayr had obviously done their homework and were playing a pressing game in an attempt to stop Queen’s playing their usual passing game.

Queen’s first attack resulted in a free kick just outside the Ayr box but did not result in a goal attempt.

Twenty minutes into the game and Ayr continued to play a high line and a pressing game. And it was working as the young Queen’s players were making mistakes due to having no time on the ball before being closed down.

Queen’s were now beginning to get to grips with the game and had a couple of shots on goal which were very effectively dealt with by the Ayr keeper.

In the 32nd minute Ayr United were awarded a penalty when the Ayr forward was bundled off the ball inside the Queen’s box. Their number 11 converted to open the scoring.

Queen’s started the second half in a much more positive manner. They took the game to Ayr and managed to hit the woodwork twice in the open 15 minutes of the half. The Ayr keeper pushed the ball onto the bar from a shot and Liam McLeish crashed the ball off the bar from 20 yards out

Almost immediately after Liam’s attempt Ayr doubled their lead. The Ayr number 9 shot home from wide left,  15 yards out.

In the 70th minute Ayr added a third. From some good play down the right, the ball is switched to the left for the Ayr 9, unmarked, to fire home.

Queen’s tried to get back in the game but could not match the Ayr side for pace or determination.

Queen’s Park: Russell, McDowell, Bruce, Graham, Reid, Ross, Lind, McLeish, Howe, Mahon, Connelly. Subs: Beverage, Thomson, Lickrish, Fairlie, McQuaid, Scott.
