The End of Krakoa Is Hinted at in Marvel Comics' Timeless Event
WARNING: Spoilers for Timeless #1 ahead!
It seems as though the X-Men's new nation of Krakoa might be coming to an end in the future, with the newly released Timeless #1 teasing that the anti-mutant organization Orchis will gain control of Earth for humanity once and for all. Orchis, introduced in Jonathan Hickman's House/Powers of X relaunch, is a vast agency made up of multiple pre-existing human-led groups that is strictly pro-humanity and has been working hard to take down Krakoa.
The nation of Krakoa is pretty much under constant attack from various mutant-hating factions throughout Earth, but Orchis has been established as the overarching big bad of the entire new X-Men line. Si Spurrier (Way of X) has stated that Orchis is, "...not just the baddie in my book, it's THE baddie in all of our books." Jonathan Hickman and his host of X-Office collaborators worked incredibly hard to create a comprehensive and accurate portrayal of how an organization like Orchis, made up of former workers from S.H.I.E.L.D, Hydra, A.I.M., and more, could actually defeat the mutants.
The Kang the Conqueror-focused Timeless #1—written by Jed MacKay and illustrated by Kev Walker, Greg Land, Mark Bagley, and Kael Ngu—shows Kang needing to defeat a "rogue parallel timeline" which could cause a multitude of potential futures to develop in ways Kang and Earth-616 are not prepared for. One of the multiversal images Kang views, which he confirms is actually happening somewhere in the multiverse, is clearly of an Orchis flag. The organization Orchis was created to not only be a scientific agency that created weapons to destroy mutants (granted, making the advanced Sentinels called Nimrods IS a major part of their work) but also be a holistic organization that focuses on marketing, sociology, finance and other "high level" systemic arenas where the humans can fight back against the increased influence of mutants on their society.
Seeing an Orchis flag is certainly worrisome for the mutant race since it means that they might have become more public with their position as anti-mutant and perhaps even claimed Krakoa or Arakko for their own with their flag. The current Inferno event has seen Krakoa's Quiet Council trying (and failing) to fully destroy Orchis with the X-Force team being slaughtered over and over again, giving Orchis a lot of practice in killing powerful mutants. Referring to the Orchis flag Kang the Conqueror states, "...While further in the future, another reckoning leaves humanity with dominion over Earth."
This might seem very straight forward—in one potential future Orchis causes a mutant "reckoning" that leaves them and humanity in full control of Earth's future—but the use of the word "Dominion" might be hinting at a much more cosmic issue. It was revealed in House of X that a Dominion—described as "categorically god-like"— is a violent collection of Titans (advanced intelligent black holes). The techno-organic murderous race The Phalanx worships these cosmic-level threats, and the Omega-Sentinel has confirmed that a Dominion could wipe out all of the world's mutants. This begs the question: Will Orchis find a way to control or ally themselves with the Sol System's Dominion as a way to destroy the nation of Krakoa?
With the Inferno event leaving the fate of X and Magneto up in the air, and with Destiny and Mystique potentially assuming control of Krakoa, there are so many directions that the Orchis-led future could come from that could lead to the destruction of Krakoa and mutants control over the Sol System. For those interested in exploring how Orchis may control the X-Men's future and destroy their nation of Krakoa, be sure to read Timeless #1 to see how Kang deals with the rogue timeline and also pick up the next Krakoan event X-Lives/X-Deaths of Wolverine, which is teased as the continuation of the X-Men's Timeless-predicted future.
