Shang-Chi Throwback Image Shows Simu Liu’s Parents at Premiere
Actor Simu Liu has shared a heartwarming 2021 throwback photo showing his parents attending the premiere of Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. In September, the actor debuted as the titular hero with his very own origin story. He is the first Phase 4 MCU hero to debut with his very own standalone movie.
Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings tells the origin story of Shang-Chi (Simu Liu). Raised to be a living weapon by his father, The Mandarin (Tony Leung), the child assassin eventually escapes to America and goes into hiding in an effort to avoid becoming a member of The Ten Rings terrorist organization. However, his father’s henchmen eventually find him, which leads him on a journey to the mythical Chinese village of Ta Lo. From there, he faces off against his father and The Dweller in Darkness and inherits the powerful Ten Rings. Even in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Shang-Chi was a success upon its release. A Shang-Chi sequel is currently in development, with director Destin Daniel Cretton set to return behind the camera.
Now, with 2021 in the rear view, Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu clearly decided to take some time for reflection on his big entrance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the course of the last year. In fact, the actor took to Instagram to post a heartwarming photo of his parents at the Hollywood premiere of Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings over the summer. Check out the image below.

That image was clearly taken on the red carpet of the premiere, which took place in Hollywood during the summer. In the photo, Simu Liu frames his parents as they pose with a prop box containing the titular Ten Rings bracelets, with his now-iconic costume displayed in the background. Captioning the image with the phrase “Photo of the Year,” it’s instantly apparent that Liu has quite a bit of pride in his role as Shang-Chi.
Of course, there is also a clear argument to be made that this image encapsulates why Simu Liu was a great choice for the role of Shang-Chi in the first place. The film heavily leans into themes of family and relationships to parents, and while Simu obviously has a less tumultuous relationship with his parents compared to what audiences saw in the film, he very apparently seems to embody the film’s themes in his relationship with his own parents. It is currently unclear exactly when and where Shang-Chi will show up next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings are currently available to stream on Disney+.
