Manchester United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick has praised the mentality of Donny van de Beek, and he is determined to keep him for the rest of the campaign.
The Dutchman was linked with a temporary move to Everton during the summer, but then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer intervened to block his potential departure.
The midfielder was assured with regular game time, but that has not been the case. He has played just 361 minutes of first-team football this season.
Things have not improved under Rangnick. He has played just six minutes in the Premier League while his only start came in the dead rubber Champions League game against Young Boys.
Van de Beek is obviously desperate for consistent playing time with the World Cup next year.
He was recently dropped by manager Louis van Gaal citing his lack of minutes for the Red Devils.
Speaking in today’s press conference, Rangnick gave his backing to van de Beek.
He told Sky Sports: “He’s got a top mentality, works hard in every training session – he’s a team player through and through, and there will be games where he’ll get his chance.”
“I had a long conversation with him last week and of course it’s difficult for him right now because he wants to play for the Dutch team at the World Cup, and in order to do that he needs game time.
“But I still believe we should keep him definitely until the end of the season and help him get as much game time as possible.”
Van de Beek has seen Scott McTominay and Fred put up stand-out performances under Rangnick, and the duo are likely to start in midfield against Wolverhampton Wanderers tomorrow.
He will have to make an impact off the bench, but it won’t be easy. Nemanja Matic has also been preferred ahead of him lately. The Serbian produced a steady display against Burnley in the holding midfield role.
Hence, his chances could come higher up the field, but he faces similar competition.
Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood have all played behind the front two under Rangnick.
The £22.5 million-rated star will need to stay patient to break into the manager’s plans, but it won’t be a surprise if he pushes for an exit this month.
His chances of making the World Cup squad could become slimmer with every month if his situation does not improve.
