Fantastic Beasts 3 Image Shows Newt & His Brother Exploring A Cave
Newt and Theseus explore a cave in the latest Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore image. The prequel to one of the biggest franchises in history, the Fantastic Beasts series has, so far, failed to capture the magic of its heritage. Despite criticism of its first two entries, the upcoming third film looks to reach the dizzying success of the Harry Potter movies, helped along by a new look for the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, as the war between a reluctant Dumbledore and Grindelwald finally looks to come to a head.
While the first Fantastic Beasts movie played out as a fun monster hunt around 1920s New York, the sequel The Crimes of Grindelwald became a far more serious affair, focusing on the exploits of the titular evil wizard and his grasp for power. While Eddie Redmayne leads the cast in all three films as Newt Scamander, the second film introduced Jude Law as a young Albus Dumbledore, long before the Hogwarts headmaster's involvement with the world's most famous wizard. Despite Johnny Depp's turn as Grindelwald in the first two movies, the character will instead be played by Mads Mikkelsen in the upcoming The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Shared by USA Today, a new image from the upcoming movie shows Newt and his brother Theseus in action. The smart-dressed pair are pictured in a cavern, looking in wonder at something far off. Always one to involve himself in his brother's escapades, Theseus holds out a lantern to light the pair's way, while a rope hints that the wizards have had to get their hands dirty to go on their spelunking adventure. First introduced in The Crimes of Grindelwald, Theseus, played by Callum Turner, became a critical part of the Fantastic Beasts storyline. Theseus spent much of the previous film trying to convince his objecting brother to join the war against Grindelwald, before the Auror and war hero got his wish, with the death of Theseus' fiancée, Leta Lestrange, forcing Newt's hand under tragic circumstances. The latest image shows that Theseus will continue to be an important figure in the franchise, this time joining his younger sibling underground, as the storm that is Grindelwald draws ever closer to the peaceful wizarding world.
The Secrets of Dumbledore isn't the only thing keeping the Harry Potter magic alive. The recent Return To Hogwarts reunion provided a joyful, and somewhat tearful, look back at the incredible success of the franchise with many of the movie's stars. While Fantastic Beasts remains the only current Harry Potter spinoff in the works, fans can at least rejoice in the knowledge that two more movies in the franchise are planned, despite the series starting as a trilogy. But, while more Harry Potter magic is always a welcome cinema treat, the success of The Secrets of Dumbledore is key if Fantastic Beasts wants to imitate the extraordinary success of the wider wizarding world.
