Dragon Ball Super: Is Super Hero Really A Gohan Story?
A Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero trailer has some thinking that the movie is actually about Gohan and not Goku. Could that really be the case?
A Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero trailer has created the impression that the new movie may actually be a Gohan story. If this theory about the film is true, it would stand apart from all other stories that have been told under the “Dragon Ball Super” branding. Thus far, every major storyline associated with the anime has been focused on the adventures of Goku and Vegeta.
There was a time when it was commonly believed that Dragon Ball was positioning Goku’s son to take over as the main protagonist. However, those days have long since passed. Goku figuring out that Gohan had secretly surpassed him and picking him to be the one to fight Perfect Cell indicated a change in course for the series, but it didn’t last long. Losing his interest in fighting caused him to slack off on his training. As a result, his relevance to the story lessened. Since then, Gohan and the rest of the Z-Warriors have been side characters in comparison to Goku and Vegeta, who have done most of the fighting in Dragon Ball Super.
The second trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero has some thinking that the franchise is finally shifting the attention away from Goku and delivering a story centered on Gohan. Despite not being in the first trailer at all, the emphasis on Gohan and Piccolo’s fight with the Red Ribbon Army’s androids does indeed give that feel, but even so, there’s still reason to doubt that Super Hero will head in this direction. Considering how focused the franchise has been on Goku, it’s hard to say for sure if Dragon Ball is willing to put Gohan in the spotlight. However, the fact that he’s filled this role before at least strengthens this possibility.
Dragon Ball Z putting Gohan ahead of all the Z-Warriors and then having him waste his potential as a fighter created a great deal of disappointment. But recent developments in the anime have provided hope for Gohan’s future. His inability to put up a fight against Frieza motivated him to train with Piccolo again and get back into fighting shape. His performance in the Tournament of Power went a long way toward redeeming the character, but there remains a sense that Dragon Ball isn’t done with this arc. Gohan has become more powerful than ever, but he’s still levels below Goku and Vegeta. It could be that Dragon Ball Super has been setting up a battle where Gohan catches up to the top two Z-Warriors and uses his newfound strength to save the world.
Based on Dragon Ball Super’s setup and Gohan’s previous role in the franchise, the idea of the new movie being a Gohan story doesn’t seem so implausible. With all the years that he's stood on the sidelines, Gohan rising up and taking center stage is something that the fanbase has been requesting for a long time now. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but there really is a chance that it won’t be Goku and Vegeta who have to save humanity from the Red Ribbon Army in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Instead, it may be Gohan and Piccolo who get to be the real heroes.
