DVLA warns drivers about important update – and if motorists miss it they could end up with a £1,000 fine
MOTORISTS are being reminded by the Driver and Vehicle Licence Agency to make sure their driver’s licence details are up to date.
You may have forgotten to change it when moving house but keeping it current will help you avoid a £1,000 fine.
Keep your address up to date or it could cost you[/caption]It’s essential to keep all your personal details on your driving licence up to date, including if you change address.
DVLA issued the reminder through Twitter, saying: Use our easy online service to let us know you’ve moved, and we can update your driving licence and log book quickly.”
The DVLA needs access to your current address in case it needs to contact you.
This may include sending driving fines or important documentation that needs to be sent to the correct address.
Failing to keep your licence address up to date could result in a £1,000 fine, a hefty amount for a simple change.
Your address doesn’t need to be changed if you are living in temporary accommodation, such as university halls, as long as the DVLA can still get hold of you through the address on your licence.

Drivers do not have to pay extra to have the address updated on their licence and can still drive while awaiting their new one.
How to change my address with the DVLA?
To change the address on your licence, you will need:
- your driving licence
- to live in Great Britain
- to give the addresses you’ve lived at in the previous three years
- to not be banned from driving
You can change your address through the website at gov.uk.
It is also possible to change the address via post.
To do this, you need to complete the “changes” section on the letter D741 which would have come with your licence.
If you don’t have your D741, you can fill in a D1 for cars and motorbikes or D2 for lorries and vans.
These forms can be obtained from any post office.
Once complete, send the letter and photocard licence to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BN.
