Red Hood Breaks His Pledge to Give Up Firearms in Epic New Cosplay
Recently, Red Hood pledged to Batman he would stop using firearms, but he breaks that promise in epic cosplay. Reddit user Takoyaki67 shared a sample of a recent photoshoot, showing Red Hood going back on his word to Batman by brandishing two guns, firing them at an unspecified target.
Red Hood is Jason Todd, the second Robin. After dying at the hands of the Joker, Todd was revived many years later, taking the name Red Hood and dispensing violent justice on Gotham’s underworld. Red Hood did not hesitate to kill, sometimes using guns. Batman’s distaste for guns is well documented, and for many years this put him at odds with Red Hood. In addition, Red Hood harbored resentment towards his former mentor, blaming Batman for his death. However, relations between the two have thawed; Red Hood has tempered his violent streak, opting to now use non-lethal force. Furthermore, Red Hood pledged to abandon his use of firearms; first he agreed to use only rubber bullets before giving guns up all together. Red Hood’s recent decisions have led to him being fully welcomed back into the Bat-Family, but an epic new cosplay shows him breaking his vow to Batman.
In a post to r/cosplay on Reddit, user Takoyaki67 uploaded two photos. The first shows an unidentified cosplayer, dressed in an earlier incarnation of Red Hood’s outfit. He is standing in the neon-lit street, firing two guns at an off-camera target, blatantly flaunting Batman’s “no-gun” rule. The background is digitally added, as revealed in a second, behind the scenes photo, showing the same photo without the effects added in. The cosplay is stunningly accurate, looking as if Red Hood stepped off the comics page and into our world, ready to dish out brutal justice to those who prey on the innocent.
Red Hood’s decision to give up guns was a monumental step forward for his character. Since his return in 2005’s Batman #635, Red Hood’s “crusade” for justice has involved firearms. He knew Batman did not approve of their use, yet he used them anyway. As Red Hood has come to terms with his death and resurrection, it has forced him to look inward. He has reconciled with Batman and the Bat-Family, and has taken his place along Nightwing, Spoiler and Tim Drake. Red Hood has taken steps to learn mercy and compassion, which necessitated letting guns go. Yet in this cosplay shoot, that comes to an end. Fans can only imagine Batman, and the rest of the Bat-Family’s heartbreak at seeing Red Hood return to his violent, gun-toting ways.
Red Hood’s life has not been an easy one, starting life as a street kid, only to be brutally killed after getting the opportunity of a lifetime. His anger is understandable but his use of guns was not. He grew to understand this and gave them up. However, in a this cosplay shoot he breaks that vow and fans hearts in the process.
