Bertinelli, 61, and the late Van Halen first met backstage at a Van Halen concert in 1980 and then walked down the aisle eight months later.
Despite what many called a rushed marriage, the former couple were reportedly good together and managed to stay together for over 20 years.
The couple ultimately parted ways in 2001 and finalized their divorce five years later.
“One of the many reasons that Ed and I split up is to give Wolfie a better vision of what two people who are supposedly in love treat each other like,” Bertinelli told Oprah.
“So I’m hoping that when he does get married and start a life for himself, that he takes his time and marries a friend and not just someone that he can’t keep his hands off.”
She also revealed that part of their downfall was from infidelity on both their parts.
“I was infatuated with the drummer of this band [who] was friends of my brother,” she added. “I just wanted somebody to touch me and love me. And I wasn’t getting it at home. Now, that’s not an excuse. What I should have done is dealt with the problems in our marriage, separated, and then if I want to go do something, I can. But it was a big, huge wrong choice.”
Following their divorce, Bertinelli went on to marry Tom Vitale in 2011, and Van Hallen married Janie Liszewski in 2009, whom he was married to until his death.

What was Eddie Van Halen’s cause of death?
Van Halen tragically passed away on October 6, 2020, at the age of 65, following a long battle with throat cancer that ultimately moved to his brain.
At the time, his death certificate, which was obtained by TMZ, cited a cerebrovascular accident, or a stroke. He also had a number of underlying causes including skin cancer on his head and neck.
In January 2021, Bertinelli broke down in tears during an appearance on the Today Show, where she opened up about how “hard” it was following his death.
“I don’t know why I’m tearing up. You know when you hear voices and you see people that you feel the connection with and — you guys always make me tear up,” she said at the time. “It’s been rough. Very bittersweet.”
She later went on to admit that she had gone to text him multiple times before realizing that she couldn’t.
In her book, which was released on January 18, 2022, Bertinelli touched upon her late ex-husband’s death again.
“I wasn’t expecting to write a book about grief when I started it, but I was in the thick of it,” she told USA Today. “It actually ended up being very cathartic to write about it.”
In the book, she revealed that she and Van Halen grew closer following their divorce, later referring to him as her “soulmate.”
“Ed and I grew even closer together,” she wrote. “We couldn’t live with each other, but we found it impossible to live completely apart.”
