Marvel Zombies: A Zombicide Game Reveals Superhero Undead & X-Men
Board game makers CMON and Spin Master Games have released new details about Marvel Zombies: A Zombicide Game, which will allow players to either fend off an army of undead superheroes as the Uncanny X-Men or conquer the world as the meta-powered zombie hoard. Marvel has seen a new wave of success on the gaming front in recent years, thanks to successful video game titles like Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series and Square Enix’s Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, in addition to promising future releases like Marvel’s Midnight Suns and Marvel’s Wolverine.
Marvel Zombies is a 2005 comic book miniseries by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman where, as the title implies, the world’s superheroes are infected with a zombie virus from another dimension - and much chaos ensues for Earth’s few remaining survivors. The storyline would spawn many follow-ups and even get an MCU adaptation in the Marvel: What If? animated series. A Marvel Zombies spin-off is currently planned for Disney Plus, but there's even more scope for Marvel zombies in gaming.
As reported by ComicBook, CMON and Spin Master Games have unveiled new details about their latest zombie-based project, Marvel Zombies: A Zombicide Game. First announced back in November, Marvel Zombies: A Zombicide Game puts players in a world overrun by zombified versions of iconic Marvel heroes like Iron Man and Captain America, and comes in two variations: the standard Marvel Zombies game and an expansion, X-Men Resistance. Both include Undead Mode - where players take control of the zombie heroes as they try to infect 12 Bystander characters using unique abilities and Zombie Trait cards - and Resistance Mode - where players assume the role of the remaining uninfected heroes as they battle to survive the apocalypse. Both the standard Marvel Zombies and X-Men Resistance feature mini-figures based on the work of comic artist Marco Checchetto, and the Kickstarter campaign has already surpassed its $500,000 goal. Interested fans can support under one of three pledges: one for the standard Marvel Zombies, one for X-Men Resistance, and a third that includes a massive-sized Zombie Galactus game piece.
Kickstarter has been a popular means for creators to finance their passion projects, and this rings true for board games based on famous gaming properties. Board game versions of The Witcher, Monster Hunter, and The Binding Of Isaac each raised millions of dollars within a day of their respective Kickstart campaigns going live, and upcoming Resident Evil and Borderlands games are currently being financed by the crowdfunding site.
Marvel Zombies has always been a very popular What If storyline, and CMON’s Zombiecide mechanics fit right into a superhero world overrun by undead former heroes. If the Kickstarter campaign continues to do well, fans will be able to jump into the infected Marvel Universe when Marvel Zombies: A Zombiecide Game launches sometime next year.
