Captain America Relaunches As Two Series With Return of Sam Wilson

Over the next few months, Marvel is relaunching Captain America as not one but two different titles, including one that features Sam Wilson picking up the shield again. Captain America; Sentinel of Liberty follows the adventures of Steve Rogers while Captain America: Symbol of Truth follows Sam Wilson, the former Falcon. Both books will spin out of the shocking events of April’s Captain America #0
Although most comic fans know Steve Rogers as Captain America, there have been several others who have picked up the shield; John Walker the USAgent, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes are some of the more notable examples. Bucky took up the role after Captain America was seemingly killed, and his tenure would last several years. He relinquished the shield when Steve returned. A few years later, when Captain America was subjected to a rapid-aging process, Sam Wilson took up the mantle. Sam refocused the character, making him into a community activist. Now, Sam Wilson is poised to take up his own shield, fighting alongside Steve Rogers in two new Captain America books. Sam’s title, Captain America: Symbol of Truth, will be written by Tochi Onyebuch and illustrated by R.B. Silva; Steve’s book, Captain America; Sentinel of Liberty will be written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and illustrated by Carmen Canero.
A trailer posted to Marvel’s YouTube page gives readers a first peak at the new titles. The trailer opens playing the theme to Captain America’s 1960s cartoon. Viewers are treated to images of Captain America and Falcon teaming up through the years. The trailer goes on to show original artwork from the forthcoming books, including Mark Brook’s wraparound cover to April’s Captain America #0. The cover shows both Captains America standing strong, flanked by both friend and foe alike. Other highlights of the trailer include the revelation of Sam’s new shield as well as the creative teams.
Over the course of 80 years, Captain America has grown beyond simply being a superhero, and has evolved into a symbol of all that is great about the country. Captain America has become too big to be contained to one person; there have been multiple Captains America, each bringing their own spin to the role and last year’s United States of Captain America proved this. Sam Wilson distinguished himself during his time as Captain America, and now he returns to the role only this time fighting alongside Steve Rogers. The question then is: how will the Marvel Universe react to two Captains America?
Sam Wilson has made a name for himself as both the Falcon and Captain America. Now, he is primed to take the mantle once again in Captain America: Symbol of Truth, one of two new Captain America titles launching this Spring.
