Dark Knights of Steel: The Gathering Storm Prepares for War With Epic Art

0

Any comic fans not already familiar with the fantastic reimagining of the DC Universe in the pages of Dark Knights of Steel will soon have a chance to catch up with the exciting series in Dark Knights of Steel: The Gathering Storm, collecting issues 1-3. The reprint featuring the first three issues of Tom Taylor and Yasmine Putri's fantasy tale was recently announced as the series moves into its next dramatic act. The collection comes as the series continues to ride a wave of popularity with both fans and critics.

In a loving tribute that combines fantasy storytelling with superhero comics, Dark Knights of Steel takes place in alternate universe where the heroes of the DCU are given sword and sorcery makeovers. Friends become foes and alliances have been formed to combat the powerful kingdom led by the Court of El. Prince Kal-El must keep his family's power in place as the Bat-Prince roots out the enemies who wish to see the ruling Els brought down. The intrigue so far has captivated readers, and it seems DC is confident that word of mouth has created enough demand that fans late to the story will want to jump aboard.

Dark Knights of Steel: The Gathering Storm was revealed in a press release from DC Comics. Credited to selling out the first three issues, DC is releasing the collection as a chance for fans who missed out on the story so far. DC included statements by series' co-creators Tom Taylor and Yasmine Putri who look forward to bringing new fans in. Taylor hypes up the "many twists and turns to come," and Putri promises "more adventures are coming soon." The reprint comes in a bound format and includes brand new cover art prominently featuring the fantasy version of the classic DC Trinity.

The collection comes rather quickly considering most ongoing comic series are generally republished in trade format and usually consist of 4-6 issues, embracing a three-issue format that's rare in American stores. The speed with which The Gathering Storm has been reprinted speaks not only to how quickly Dark Knights of Steel has sold out, but how much confidence DC has in the title. With a daring yet fun setting, the series has been a fan-favorite from the first issue, with some readers making some insanely creative tributes, including a Lego rendering of the core characters. The title is also very new-reader friendly, not requiring any previous comics knowledge to enjoy. The story is full of moving parts, though, so it also makes sense for DC to help new readers catch up quickly with Dark Knights of Steel's first act in one convenient location.

With factions being formed and conspiracies brewing in the background, the story is building to some epic events, and The Gathering Storm provides curious DC fans a chance to learn everything they need as Taylor and Putri's tale moves ahead. Dark Knights of Steel: The Gathering Storm will be available in comic stores March 1, 2022.
