Prince Charles ‘invited Harry and Meghan to stay with him’ for Platinum Jubilee
Prince Charles is thought to have invited his son Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle to stay at his home when they visit the UK.
The offer comes amid the couple’s security concerns ahead of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and also fears the Duke of Sussex will criticise the relationship between Camilla and the Prince of Wales.
A source told The Sun: ‘Harry is fiercely loyal and protective of his late mother and her legacy, and didn’t approve of Camilla sweeping in as the great love of his father’s life.
‘Understandably he found those early years incredibly difficult, and he might publicly blame Camilla for much of what he believes went wrong in his childhood, and the trauma the whole situation caused.
‘Charles is deeply protective of Camilla. The last thing he needs — especially in a year of celebration that should be all about the Queen — is an excoriating takedown of Camilla at a time when people have finally taken her to their hearts.’
There are several events this year which Harry may want to visit the UK for, including a memorial for his grandad Prince Philip in April as well as the jubilee in June.
Prince Charles reportedly hopes to meet his granddaughter Lilibet for the first time, who was born in the US last year.
An insider told The Mirror: ‘The Prince of Wales has been saddened that he hasn’t had the opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren, which he really does miss.
‘He is a fantastic grandfather and loves playing the role immensely and it’s certainly fair to say he feels there is something missing from his life without the ability to get to know Harry’s children.
‘This is something he is hoping to remedy which is why he made the gesture for Harry, Meghan and the children to stay with him if they wanted to, whenever they may come home for a period of time.’
The dad and son have apparently had several ‘good-natured’ phone calls over the past few months to try and clear the air after previous difficulties in their relationship.
A source told The Sun: ‘There has been a definite thaw in relations between Harry and Charles. They are on much better terms and have been having friendly chats and video calls.
‘It has been suggested to Harry he may live to regret any lingering family bitterness, and he has taken that on board.
‘There is a feeling he is coming back more into the fold and wants to be closer to his family.’
In a recent documentary Prince Harry said his life in the Royal Family was at times a ‘nightmare’ and that he turned to drink and drugs to numb the pain – comments which were said to have ‘hurt’ his dad and tested their relationship.
It was revealed recently the Duke of Sussex fears he is ‘unable to return to his home’ in Britain as it is too dangerous.
The prince filed a claim for a judicial review against a Home Office decision not to allow him to personally pay for police protection for himself and his family while in the UK.
He wishes to fund the security himself, rather than ask taxpayers to foot the bill.
Harry argues his private protection team in the US does not have adequate jurisdiction abroad or access to UK intelligence information which is needed to protect his family.
It follows an incident in London last summer which saw his security compromised after his car was chased by paparazzi photographers as he left a charity event.
