Predator Prey Movie Draws Inspiration From God of War Game

0

Director Dan Trachtenberg says the new Predator movie, Prey, draws inspiration from the video game franchise God of War. Before taking on Prey, Trachtenberg previously directed 10 Cloverfield Lane and an episode of The Boys. Prey is written by Patrick Aison, who has worked on the Treadstone and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan TV shows. The cast of Prey includes Amber Midthunder, Dane DiLiegro, and Stefany Mathias. Prey is said to take place 300 years ago, focusing on Midthunder's Naru, a skilled warrior of the Comanche Nation. When one of the first highly-evolved Predators lands on Earth, it's up to Naru to protect her tribe.

God of War is an action-adventure video game franchise that started in 2005 with the first entry in the series. Players take on the role of Kratos, a Spartan warrior who was tricked into murdering his family by the Greek god of war, Ares. The most recent installment, 2018's God of War, sees the series tackling Norse mythology, with Kratos now having his son, Atreus, along for the journey. This iteration of God of War seems to have inspired the production of Prey.

God of War has recently been getting praise for its PC port, which was released on January 14. Trachtenberg took to Twitter to add to the growing acclaim by Tweeting at God of War game director and story writer Cory Barlog. In the Tweet, Trachtenberg said, "I will pile on that praise and point out— it's had some influence on PREY." While Trachtenberg didn't elaborate on how the game inspired Prey, it was influential enough for the director to ensure it was known. Check out Trachtenberg's Tweet below:

Given that God of War deals with ancient combat, including weapons and styles, it's likely that Prey drew on those aspects, with its setting being long in the past. Prey will also focus on a solitary character battling insurmountable odds, which is something God of War's Kratos is all too familiar with, having taken down the likes of Zeus. Trachtenberg could also be referencing the massive battles, and set pieces God of War utilizes, inspiring how he would frame his fights in Prey. Given that Prey is set to focus on the Comanche tribe, it's safe to assume the inspiration the film drew from God of War has nothing to do with the cultures on display within each project.

The God of War franchise is slated to get another installment this year with God of War Ragnarok, which picks up after the 2018 installment and continues with Norse mythology. Prey is the first Predator film since 2018's The Predator, which missed with critics and audiences. Prey doesn't have a definitive release date, though it was announced last November that the movie would debut on Hulu this summer. A trailer should be released in the coming months, which could give audiences a better idea of the influences Prey took from God of War.
