Will further England starlets follow Bellingham?
Jude Bellingham has followed in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho by starring in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund at the tender age of 18. Bellingham has entrenched himself as a starter for Die Schwarz-Gelben and has operated at a high level both domestically and on the world stage in the Champions League.
The standard of his performances has given Gareth Southgate food for thought ahead of the 2022 World Cup, where Bellingham will be pushing for a starting role. Bellingham made the bold decision to move to Germany two years ago when he was a sought asset at Championship outfit Birmingham City. Despite interest from the Premier League, Bellingham made the choice to pursue first-team football in the Bundesliga and has been rewarded for his brave move.
After 20 matches of the 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign, Dortmund is off the pace of Bayern at the top of the table but are backed at 11/1 if you were to place a bet on football at Space Casino for them to win the league. Bellingham will play a decisive role if this were the case as he continues to flourish under the tenure of Marco Rose. If Bellingham has benefited from regular action at a high level much as Sancho did before him at Signal Iduna Park. Would another England starlet benefit from playing in the Bundesliga?
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been sensational for Everton over the last two seasons, developing into one of the most potent strikers in the Premier League. The 24-year-old had a slow start to his career with the Toffees, but has slowly blossomed into a capable player and has become an exceptional finisher in the final third, both with his head and feet. Although Calvert-Lewin has thrived at Goodison Park, Everton have struggled to compete at the top end of the table and appear to be heading towards another mediocre campaign at best after the recent sacking of Rafael Benitez.
Calvert-Lewin has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal in the past, but a move to Dortmund as a potential replacement for Erling Haaland might be a great fit for the forward to shine in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. Even Bayern could view Calvert-Lewin as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. The England international should be seriously considered by these clubs and he would be wise to be interested.
Another one to watch is Dean Henderson, who enjoyed a terrific campaign with Sheffield United in the Premier League in the 2019/20 season. He propelled himself into the England squad after playing a starring role for the Blades in their ninth-place finish in the top flight under Chris Wilder. However, he was subsequently recalled by Manchester United from his loan spell at Bramall Lane to provide pressure on David de Gea and potentially replace the Spaniard between the posts.
Although there were signs of struggle from De Gea, the keeper has regained his top form over the last two years, leaving Henderson to sit on the bench. His progress has been stymied and 24-year-old Henderson is reportedly very unhappy with his current role at the club. Manuel Neuer is 35 and has one year remaining on his contract at Bayern, who could look to replace the German with a long-term option in the mould of Henderson. RB Leipzig has the cash to spend and a move for Henderson would provide an upgrade over Peter Gulacsi.
Sancho and Bellingham have proven that English players can move and thrive in the Bundesliga, there should be a queue of talent ready to secure moves to Germany in the near future after being frustrated or overlooked by their clubs.
