Kathy Najimy Improvises More Jokes In Hocus Pocus 2 | Screen Rant
Disney's Hocus Pocus 2 has seen star Kathy Najimy (Mary Sanderson) improvise more jokes in scenes this time around than in the original.
Kathy Najimy has been improvising a lot of jokes in Disney's Hocus Pocus 2. The star left audiences in stitches as witch Mary Sanderson in the original Hocus Pocus. A devout follower of her sister Winifred Sanderson (Bette Midler), Mary joins Sarah Sanderson (Sarah Jessica Parker) as secondary villain. Her bumbling moments and hilarious facial expressions add an extra layer of hilarity to the film, which sees the Sanderson sisters on a mission to stay young forever.
Audiences delighted when it was announced that Najimy, Midler and Parker would return to their witchy ways in Hocus Pocus 2. As production began across Rhode Island, which was transformed into Salem, the world began to get glimpses of the terrifyingly terrific trio back in character. An official Hocus Pocus 2 first look photo proved that although decades have past, the leading ladies still have a lock on their Sanderson counterparts, who seem to have been waiting to break free. Though evil witches, a major draw to the characters is how funny they each are.
Hocus Pocus 2's Key Production Assistant, Nathan Walker, told Rhody Radio that this time around Najimy has been improvising tons of jokes. Teasing that Mary will wow viewers with lots of witty lines, he said:
"She's so funny and in this one she's been allowed to improvise a lot more, so she has some great one-liners... She's got a lot of really good stuff to work with on this one."
It's clear that while Najimy was given great material in the script, written by Jen D'Angelo (Workaholics), she used it as a diving board to improvise. Overall, Walker spoke incredibly highly of Najimy, painting a kind picture of the star. He said her husband Dan visits the set often and that their relationship is adorable. The PA also discussed what a joy it is to see all three of the iconic witches back together once again, saying their chemistry is electric. He said Sarah Jessica Parker is kind and "quirky," and Midler is all business onset.
While some of Najimy's bits may not make the final cut, it's exciting to know that the talent has been given the freedom to flex her skills. After all, not only is Najimy known for her comedic chops, but she's also a very gifted writer in her own right. Her lengthy and lauded career certainly earns her a banquet of creative power as it does for her co-stars. Since all three of the leads created their roles, it's safe to say any ad-libs they make in Hocus Pocus 2 will be on point. Some of the best moments from the original flick were improvised, from Midler's cursing to Doug Jones' Billy Butcherson dialogue. No to mention that this time around they've had nearly 30 years to ponder ideas.
