The Ferengi, one of the most intriguing races in the Star Trek universe, are set to have their history changed forever in a special new one-shot. Star Trek: Ferengi, part of IDW Publishing’s Star Trek Aliens series, chronicles the adventures of three Ferengi at a crucial point in their species’ history. The one-shot goes on sale in print and digital this April.

Introduced in the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Ferengi are a hyper-capitalist, hyper-misogynistic species who are forever in search of profit and riches. Intended to be the series’ main villains, the Ferengi proved a difficult sale, and were relegated to background status. However, the Ferengi reappeared in the spin-off Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; Quark, the station’s bartender was Ferengi and ran the bar with his family, including his brother Rom and nephew Nog. Thanks to Deep Space Nine, the Ferengi became more layered and nuanced, particularly with the introduction of Ishka, Quark and Rom’s mother. Ishka was a free-thinker who refused being docile and submissive. This independent spirit rubbed off on Rom, who, at the show’s end, became the leader of Ferengi society, intending to steer them in a more benevolent, socialistic direction. Now, Quark, Rom and Ishka’s story continues in a special one-shot that will change the Ferengi forever! The issue is written by Christina Rice and illustrated by Andy Price.

In an announcement posted to Comicbook.com, IDW released more information on the series, including a look at Andy Price’s cover, shared below. Quark returns home to Ferenginar, where Rom and Ishka are challenging the very assumptions on which Ferengi society are built. The one-shot promises Ferengi culture will change forever. Andy Price’s cover shows Ishka proudly declaring the “future is female,” while her less progressively minded son Quark looks on exasperated.

The Ferengi, with their capitalist focus on profit and wealth, were intended to be the counterpoint to the socialist, utopian United Federation of Planets. They were intended to be Star Trek: The Next Generation’s main antagonists, but quickly fizzled. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine salvaged the Ferengi, adding a depth to the species that rivaled more popular races such as the Klingons and the Vulcans. The series ended on the note that the Ferengi were heading to better things, that Rom would reform their society. Now IDW is picking up this thread, treating fans to a brand-new adventure featuring three of Star Trek’s most beloved Ferengi. The Ferengi are deeply traditional, meaning Rom’s proposed reforms will be met with pushback, which will no doubt draw Quark in as he tries to help his brother.

IDW Publishing continues their line of Star Trek comics with their Alien Spotlight series, and this April they shine the light on the Ferengi, catching the species on the eve of a major crossroads in their history.
