Scream 6: Sam's Mom Appearing Would Solve A Scream 2022 Mystery

In Scream 2022, Sam’s mom Christina is mentioned but never on screen; Sam’s mom appearing in Scream 6 would solve the Scream 2022 mystery of who she is. The movie has a slew of legacy characters, including Sidney (Neve Campbell), Dewey (David Arquette), and Gale (Courteney Cox), while also passing the torch to a new generation: Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Chad (Mason Gooding), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), Amber (Mikey Madison), and Richie (Jack Quaid). Legacy character Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) makes his return as a ghost haunting Sam, who left her family after learning that he is her biological father.
Scream 2022 follows the trials of Sam and her sister Tara as a new iteration of the Ghostface killer begins once again stalking the streets of Woodsboro. After fatally killing a succession of characters both new and old, including David Arquette's Dewey Riley, it is revealed during a showdown at Stu Macher's old house that the killers are actually superfans of the in-universe Stab movies. Eventually, with the help of Gale and Sidney, Sam successfully overcomes her adversaries and escapes, in no small part thanks to the coaching of her ghostly and deceased serial killer father.
Even though Billy Loomis is an essential character in Scream 2022, the mystery surrounding Sam’s mom and Loomis’ past lover is never fully addressed. If Sam’s mom were to appear in Scream 6, it would answer who she is, who she was to Billy, and if she was in the original Scream. Sam’s mother is briefly mentioned when Tara’s friend Amber (Madison) calls Christina a “loose-lipped drunk” in reference to her affair. Where the mystery lies is when Sam was conceived. Since Billy dies at the end of Scream (1996), this likely means he cheated on Sidney with Christina or had sex with her before he and Sidney were dating. Either way, this means she was the same age as Billy and possibly went to school with the original Scream crew. While many characters didn’t survive Scream 2022, some survivors can return to Scream 6: Sam, Tara, Mindy, and Chad. If Scream 6 also adds Sam's mom, this will have another new official character to the cast while still connecting to the past, making for a perfect requel.
Director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin also claims that Sam's mother was in the original Scream 2022 script, explaining: "She was definitely in the script. But it just never made the cut. It felt like we were kind of opening the movie up too much and making it not as much about the sisters... It’s hard to say, but it sounds like there’s an interesting story there…”. Aside from the Scream 2022 director teasing Sam’s mom’s identity, there have been theories floating around who Sam’s mom is and if she was in the original film. Some people believe that Christina is a guest at Stu’s house party, while others believe she is one of the girls who call Sidney’s mom a slut while she is in the bathroom stall (via Reddit). Christina appearing in Scream 6 would end these theories and officially solve the mystery of who she is and if she went to Woodsboro High School.
Since Bettinelli-Olpin revealed that Sam’s mom was in the original Scream 2022 script, it is likely she will at least make a brief appearance in Scream 6. His reasoning for leaving her out was because he wanted the story to be more about Sam and Tara. Since they are now established characters, however, it is time for Christina to be part of the story. Melissa Barrera has expressed her excitement to return to the franchise, so it would be an exciting story to see Sam and her mom’s relationship, who Billy was to her, and how his legacy has haunted her for over two decades.
