Murderville Season 2: News, Updates, Everything We Know
The status of Murderville season 2 is yet to be determined, but here's what's known about a potential second season for Netflix’s murder-mystery comedy series. Murderville adapts the format of the BBC Three show Murder in Successville, which ran from 2015 to 2017 and featured a number of British comedians. Combining the elements of murder investigations and improvisational comedy, the six-episode Murderville is Netflix’s first unscripted regular comedy. However, despite the compelling premise and a star-studded cast, Murderville and its fate are still hanging in the balance.
Produced by Emmy-winning showrunner Krister Johnson (Childrens Hospital), Murderville boasts an ensemble of comedic talent, with Arrested Development’s Will Arnett playing Senior Detective Terry Seattle. Joining him are his onscreen colleagues Haneefah Wood, Lilan Bowden, and Philip Smithey. In each Murderville episode, a celebrity guest improvises their way through the investigation to deduce who the murderer is. The absurdity of the whodunits is only heightened by the detective trainees’ comedic background, flexibility, and dedication to their role as they are subjected to unexpected twists and requests.
As of writing, Murderville season 2 has not yet been greenlit, which is not surprising given that the show is part of Netflix’s February 2022 release slate. Normally, the streaming platform tends to wait for at least a month to decide on a show’s renewal status, since it needs to evaluate the available viewership data first. Nevertheless, here is everything we know and can safely speculate about Murderville season 2.
With its interesting structure and recurring cast, Murderville has the potential to be renewed for season 2. However, since audience reception and streaming numbers are significant factors for Netflix’s renewal, Murderville needs to reach a solid average viewership. At present, this might be difficult to gauge since the show does not offer a continuous story, and its episodes do not have the same quality. Thus, viewers can simply choose which episodes to watch, but judging from early critic and audience reviews, Murderville has been positively received. In fact, it has an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 96% audience score, which impacts a show’s performance more.
While Murderville is waiting for its renewal, showrunner Krister Johnson already has ideas for future celebrity guests. In an interview with Consequence, Johnson shares his love for the Foo Fighters’ Dan Grohl. Johnson hopes that the drummer’s comedy chops will eventually make it to the show, showing that he's at least semi-confident it will get renewed.
Although Murderville’s cast had finished filming season 1 by mid-2021, Netflix only announced the show in January 2022. The first season’s trailer was released merely nine days before its February 3, 2022 premiere date. If the production of Murderville season 2 goes smoothly, viewers can expect a similar release date, probably by January or February 2023.
