OlliOlli World: How to Win the Race Against the Grizzly

0

In Cloverbrook, an area of OlliOlli World, one of the side levels pits the player in a race against a river-rafting grizzly bear. Ordinarily, the game challenges the player to use the terrain and a variety of tricks to not just beat levels, but beat them with style. However, some levels, such as Grizzly Rapids, ask the player to use the terrain and their tricks for speed rather than style.

OlliOlli World is a skateboarding platformer that takes place in the land of Radlandia, a paradise for skaters. Players act as a potential heir to the skate god, a mediator between Radlandia and Gnarvana. Beating this bear race in OlliOlli World requires the player to adjust their way of playing to something a bit different. The game has taught the player to play for points and style, trying to beat the scores of local heroes and other players. While it may be stylish, this playstyle does not necessarily encourage speed. The best way to beat the grizzly in this race down the river is prioritizing speed over flash.

There are two ways to gain speed in OlliOlli World, the first, and most obvious, is pushing. Pushing is used to keep the player moving on the board. If the player skated on flat ground and never pushed, they would slowly roll to a stop. There are two kinds of pushing, regular push and power push. Power pushes require a push to be charged for a bit and then released. Doing a power push will push the player forward much further and faster than a normal push. The second way to gain speed is through slopes. Downward slopes help the player build up speed through momentum. If the player simply lets their character slide down a slope, they will build speed, however, going down a slope while grinding will increase how much speed is being built. Slopes and power pushes can also be used together. Pushing down a slope will give the player a massive boost of speed.

To beat the grizzly in OlliOlli World, whenever the player is on normal terrain (i.e. terrain with no grinding or wall rides), they should use as many power pushes as they can—especially when on downslopes. The player should also grind on most of the rails in the level. Rails will help the player build and maintain their speed, so grinding when possible will keep the player ahead of the grizzly.

There is one exception to this advice. It is better to not use the long rail before the two wall grinds held by bees. This rail goes uphill first before building up the player’s speed with a downhill slope. This uphill slope is enough to cut into the player’s speed, allowing the grizzly to catch up or get further ahead. Instead, the player will want to use power pushes to boost themselves over the hill quicker. Additionally, they can power push themselves down the slope.

The player can use this speed to launch themselves forward and onto the next downward slope for even more speed in OlliOlli World. It is possible to perform a landing on the stairs so the player doesn’t slam, but the player can also use the second wallride to keep themselves in the air just a little longer to clear the steps. Using these tips will help the player complete this level's challenge, not without a little trial and error like all the best skateboarding games.
