Catawba Island rescue – Twenty people stranded on ice floe on Lake Erie after it broke away while they were snowmobiling

A MASS rescue is currently underway near Catawba Island in Lake Erie.

Local media was reporting that around 20 people needed to be rescued after ice broke away while people were snowmobiling.

According to USCG Great Lakes, the Coast Guard and Air Station Detroit helicopter were assisting.

The outlet also reported that a good Samaritan with an air boat was assisting.

Just days ago, the US Coast Guard was dispatched to help another seven people who were in need of rescue due to ice floe in the area.

Authorities warned people of the dangers after the Tuesday incident.

“Please exercise extreme caution as the winds out of the south are causing areas of ice to break free,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.

“If you are headed onto the ice ensure you are prepared and monitor the weather closely. Remember no ice is safe ice.”
