Luctonians 75 v 0 Harrogate
Luctonians RFC v Harrogate RUFC
Saturday 5th February 2022
Mortimer Park
Match Reporter: Geoff Vickress
From as early as the 7th minute when their dominant scrum drove the Gate scrum backwards in the red zone for a penalty try, it signalled a long afternoon for the men from Yorkshire. Lucs, with 3 players in their squad on debut, looked fluent and it was no surprise when one of the debutants, Nick Yeoward was put through following a strong run from Rob Bengry for a 12-0 lead after only 13 minutes.
Lucs’ experienced No8 Sam Jones showed all his versatility when finishing a driving maul for the first of his two tries after 24 minutes and with wing Charlie Grimes, atoning for last week’s error, going over on 27 with Louis Silver adding the extras to give the home side a handsome 26-0 lead at the half time whistle they never looked like relinquishing
Half Time Score
Luctonians RFC 26 v 0 Harrogate RUFC
Lucs rang the changes at half time with both Henry Powell and Jack Prescott entering the fray, both debutants being a product of Lucs academy, allowing the experienced Joe White on his 150th appearance for the club and captain Mat Hackley, on his 200th appearance, to both leave the field to tremendous applause.
Lucs started the second half in the same manner as they left the first and were awarded their second penalty try on 51 minutes, again following a string of dominant scrums, and when Owien Harriott-Davis powered his way over on 55, Owen Randell converting, the home side led by 40 points.
Harrogate gave their all, but for little gain as Lucs’ dominance saw them score 5 more tries in the last 20 minutes. Sam Jones, hanging onto the ball to roll in for his second, before front row Ben Link showed his strength to drive over to get the home side to the 50 point marker, Owen Randell converting all the home sides tries in the second half, for a personnel tally of 17 points on the day. Randell himself showed a clean pair of heels to the Gate defence to run in on 70 minutes before Charlie Grimes, for his second, and Ben Owen added 2 late scores to keep the scoreboard operator busy until the final whistle.
This was a tremendous result for Luctonians who were excellent and clinical throughout, and they visit Harrogate next week in the reverse fixture. It will be an interesting match-up, where no doubt Harrogate will be looking to make serious amends for this heavy defeat.
