Carer jailed for raping dementia patient, 99 as horrified family watch on spy-cam

A 99-year-old dementia patient was raped by a care home worker as her distraught family watched helplessly via a spycam.

Phillip Carey, 48, has been jailed for life for the attack on the pensioner in Blackpool, Lancashire.

The victim’s relatives installed a secret camera after becoming concerned for her welfare and noticing her behaviour had changed.

She begged visitors ‘don’t leave me, they will hurt me’ and started to refuse physical contact.

The family installed a covert camera but were horrified to witness Carey attack her on the live feed.

They immediately called police who arrested the care worker.

He eventually pleaded guilty to rape, sexual activity with a person with a mental disorder, and sexual activity in the presence of a person with a mental disorder, after the Crown Prosecution Service produced forensic evidence and the camera footage.  

Carey was jailed for a life with a minimum term of 10 years during a hearing at Preston Crown Court.

Speaking after the sentence was passed, senior prosecutor Sophie Rozdolskyj said: ‘Carey abused his position of trust and targeted a vulnerable woman whom he should have been caring for.

‘I am grateful to the victim’s family who have shown great strength throughout the court proceedings.

‘I hope today’s sentence provides them with some comfort, knowing Carey has been brought to justice for his actions.’
