Consumer tip: What can happen after your identity is stolen

When consumers suspect they have become victims of identity theft, they wonder what the thieves will do with this information. Recently, the FTC explained what happens to stolen identities. First, your stolen identity could be used to open a new credit account or service plan.

Obtain a free credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com and check for unfamiliar accounts or inquiries. Your identity can also be used to make credit card purchases or withdraw money from your bank account. Check your account statements for unauthorized purchases or withdrawals, and sign up to get alerts whenever there is a new transaction. Your stolen identity can also be used to defraud the federal government, including through fraudulent tax returns or using your Social Security number to get a job or obtain unemployment benefits. Watch for alerts about tax returns you didn’t file or claimed earning or benefits. Finally, your stolen identity could be used to obtain health care under your insurance.
