Gary police officer wounded in shooting; 1 in custody

The officer, a 32-year veteran of the force, was shot about 1 p.m. while responding to a call of shots fired, Gary police said.

A suspect was arrested and another remains at large after a Gary police officer was shot Monday in northwest Indiana.

Officers were dealing with parking violations about 12:57 p.m. in the 1500 block of West 5th Avenue when an officer called out an “active shooter situation” which unfolded in front of them, Gary police said.

An officer who was in the area saw a vehicle strike another vehicle and activated his emergency lights, police said. Someone in one of the vehicles opened fire, striking the officer in the shoulder.

The officer was identified as Sgt. William Fazekas, a 32-year-veteran of the department who is assigned to the violent crimes division, police said.

His condition was stabilized at a local hospital and he was transferred to a hospital in Chicago for further treatment, police said.

Police said one of the suspects was taken into custody, and a person of interest remains at large.
