Dakota Johnson confirms reports that she'll star in Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spinoff film, Madame Web, in a new social media post.
Dakota Johnson confirms her Madame Web casting for Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spinoff movie in a new social media post. Sony has been building its own Marvel shared universe for the last few years. This effort took off when Venom became a surprise box office hit in 2018, which led to Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Jared Leto's Morbius, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Kraven the Hunter entering development. Sony also started looking into its library of Marvel characters for other heroes and villains to adapt. The studio eventually pinpointed Madame Web as another hero worthy of their own movie.
Development on Madame Web began in 2019 when Sony hired Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to pen the script. It was then announced in 2020 that Jessica Jones director S.J. Clarkson would be at the helm of Sony's first female-led Marvel movie. With COVID-19 dramatically altering the studio's plans for Sony's Spider-Man Universe, it wasn't surprising that development on Madame Web became very quiet. That changed in a big way recently when reports surfaced that Dakota Johnson was in talks to lead the movie.
Now, Dakota Johnson shared a picture of the original article on Instagram with a simple spiderweb emoji as the caption. This confirms that the star's contract talks with Sony have concluded and that Johnson will lead Madame Web after all. The first reports of Dakota Johnson starring in Madame Web surfaced last week when Deadline shared she was in talks with Sony to lead the next Spider-Man spinoff movie. The Fifty Shades of Grey and Suspiria actress teased the possibility of this coming true on social media over the weekend, but now she's made her Marvel casting official.
Tackling the role of Madame Web comes on the heels of Johnson earning high praise for her role in Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Lost Daughter. Madame Web marks the first franchise film she'll be part of since concluding work on the Fifty Shades series in 2018. Instead, she's spent the last few years in the indie film world, leading to great performances in The Peanut Butter Falcon and the upcoming 2022 movie Am I OK? After taking some time away from bigger productions, it seems Johnson is ready to get involved with them again and become a superhero.
Now that Dakota Johnson is confirmed to star in Madame Web, it hopefully won't be too long before more information on the movie is available. Details on the characters Johnson will play are very much up in the air at the moment, as Sony's Spider-Man spinoff may have reinvented the character - traditionally an elderly woman - to fit their new star. Johnson might also be playing the Julia Carpenter version of Madame Web from the comics, previously known as Spider-Woman. With Madame Web rumored to begin production this year, more details on the story and Dakota Johnson's Marvel superhero should become known eventually.
