It followed on from Edin Dzeko’s opener as Inter beat Roma 2-0 to reach the Italian Cup semi-finals.
It marked the first time Mourinho faced Inter at San Siro since he left after leading them to the treble in 2010.
Mourinho received a warm welcome from the fans, who deployed a banner that read: ‘Welcome back home, Jose.’
But Roma players did not receive the same friendly treatment and Inter got off a perfect start as they opened the scoring with their first attack.
Ex-Roma striker Dzeko converted from an Ivan Perisic cross and beat Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio with a right-footed volley after only two minutes.
Roma’s sluggish defence looked more solid as the game progressed, but Mourinho’s team were wasteful going forward.

Sanchez then doubled Inter’s lead in the 68th minute and left Patricio with no chance.
Mourinho’s Roma are suffering inconsistent season having also dropped to seventh in the Serie A.
A 0-0 draw at home to struggling Genoa leaves their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League slim.
For Inter, their celebrations were dampened by defender Alessandro Bastoni’s injury.
He was helped off the field after hurting his right ankle and is now at risk of missing the Champions League round of 16 match against Liverpool next week.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi said: “We hope Bastoni doesnt have anything serious, unfortunately you could see he fell badly.
“Now the medics will have the tests and we hope not to lose him for too long, as he is a very, very important player for us.”
