Top Gun 2 Star Gives Update On Tom Cruise Sequel Movie
Top Gun: Maverick star Manny Jacinto gives an update on the highly anticipated Tom Cruise sequel movie, promising it'll be worth the wait. The Good Place alum is one of the large roster of performers making their franchise debut in the film alongside Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, Monica Barbaro, Charles Parnell, Jay Ellis and Danny Ramirez. Cruise is once again leading the cast of Top Gun: Maverick alongside returning star Val Kilmer.
Top Gun: Maverick picks up over 30 years after the events of the first film and sees Cruise's titular Navy pilot grounded and tasked with training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission. In addition to facing an uncertain future and his own deepest fears, Maverick must grapple with being the teaser to hothead pilot Rooster, son to his late friend and former co-pilot Goose. Development on Top Gun: Maverick has languished in hell for well over a decade and now audiences are anxiously awaiting its arrival in a few months.
While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant to discuss the Amazon rom-com I Want You Back, Manny Jacinto offered an update on Top Gun: Maverick. Though keeping his lips sealed on what's to come from the Tom Cruise sequel, the star did express an excitement for audiences to see the film and promises it'll be worth the wait. See what Jacinto said below:
"Oh man, it's been such a long time since we filmed that movie. But when it does come out, it's gonna be worth it, guys! It's gonna be worth the wait. 30+ years! So if you guys can wait that long, you can wait another three months."
As Jacinto mentions, audiences have awaited the arrival of Top Gun: Maverick for a long time, with development on the Tom Cruise sequel first being officially announced in 2010 as Paramount partnered with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott for the project and Christopher McQuarrie to script. After years of development, the film saw a major hiccup in its development with Scott's suicide in 2012, though Bruckheimer and co. would forge on ahead and eventually land Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Cruise on Oblivion, to direct. Production on Top Gun: Maverick ran from mid-2018 to early 2019, though the film has suffered numerous release delays due to the ongoing pandemic.
Along with Cruise's Mission: Impossible 7, Top Gun: Maverick has made headlines over the past couple of years for Paramount's frequent delay of a theatrical release, including turning down selling the rights to Netflix and Apple TV+ and its current release coming just shy of three years after its original date. Though Paramount has seen some box office success during the pandemic with the theatrical exclusive releases of A Quiet Place Part II, PAW Patrol: The Movie, Scream and Jackass Forever, the studio is clearly looking for the Tom Cruise sequel to reignite the summer blockbuster draw. Only time will tell if the wait is indeed worth it when Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on May 27.
