How The Olympics Inspired Captain Carter's New Costume
When Agent Carter used the Super Soldier Serum in the MCU's What If...? instead of the world getting Captain America, Peggy became Captain Carter. Now Captain Carter is getting her very own Marvel Comics series, just in time for Women's History Month in March. She'll also be getting a brand-new costume partially inspired by the Olympics.
The Captain Carter comics by Jamie McKelvie and Marika Cresta take place immediately after she gets out of the ice. The story will likely have similarities to the earlier phases of the MCU—when Captain America adjusts to modern times. The beginning of Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier similarly place Cap in lighthearted and tragic situations. While he has a list of new movies to watch, he accepts that the life he wanted with Peggy will never happen. The five-issue limited series will likely echo these situations but instead place Peggy as the First Avenger. McKelvie has already confirmed that Peggy will react to certain things differently than Steve Rogers.
Not only is the Captain Carter series going to feature a new story for Peggy, but it will also give her a whole new look. McKelvie, who was also the original designer for Carol Danvers' Captain Marvel costume, is also working on the new outfit for Captain Carter. Apparently, McKelvie based Peggy's new costume on the Great Britain athletic wear from the Olympics. In an interview with Marvel, McKelvie stated: "I was looking at modern combat dress, the practicality of it. There were things that the last couple of Olympics outfits did, Team GB (Great Britain), [taking] the colors and the shapes and sort of deconstructing them. Because one of the things when you look at Captain America, he hasn't just got a United States flag on him, you know, it's all kind of deconstructed about his costume. So it was that kind of thought process."
Like Captain America, it seems Captain Carter will get to meet Tony Stark in her new comic miniseries (and likely some of the other Avengers along the way). It will be interesting to see how things play out with Peggy's background. Despite What If...? existing as a part of the MCU, McKelvie also confirmed that he looked back to the 1980s' Captain Britain comics and brings back some elements such as the British version of S.H.I.E.L.D. called S.T.R.I.K.E. McKelvie said there will be other characters that he is not revealing yet, all of which will create a "Super Hero spy thriller in a way. So it's not all cosmic events and everything, but it's quite exciting. Mystery. A lot of action!”
Whether incoming fans pick up Captain Carter as comic book fans, MCU fans, or both, there's bound to be a lot of surprises along the way. It's clear that Peggy loves Steve Rogers, but she isn't Captain America. It's going to be exciting to see the 21st Century change Peggy, and in turn, how she'll change the 21st Century.
