Ryan Reynolds Left Pictures Of Himself In Hugh Jackman's Dressing Room
Ryan Reynolds had an unusual opening night present for his perennial frenemy Hugh Jackman, proving that the pair’s gentle ribbing has made it to the Great White Way. Reynolds and Jackman’s faux rivalry dates back to 2009 when the actors co-starred as Deadpool and Wolverine in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Though the film proved to be a forgettable X-Men installment, it spawned a beautiful quasi-friendship whose pranks have infiltrated press interviews, social media, and even the Deadpool franchise.
Through Reynolds and Jackman’s well-intentioned razzing, the pair have remained cognizant of one crucial fact: pranks make good press. Indeed, the actors tend to align their teasing and trolling with upcoming projects. Under the guise of fake disdain, Reynolds has promoted Jackman’s films Logan and The Front Runner, and Jackman returned the favor for Deadpool. Jackman’s latest project is leading The Music Man on Broadway, marking his first return to musicals since The Greatest Showman in 2017.
Now, Reynolds has brought the duo’s feud to Broadway, gifting his pal a couple of portraits–of himself, that is–to celebrate opening night. Jackman took to Twitter to share images of Reynold’s cheeky gifts, one of him clicking his heels together à la the Music Man himself, the other a stoic drawing. “I have the most amazing friends,” quips Jackman. “And then, there’s him.” Check out Reynolds’ latest gotcha below:
But what’s a gift among friends without a heartfelt note? “Hugh, good luck with your little show,” Reynolds scribbled on a Post-It, signing off ominously, “I’ll be watching.” True to his word, Reynolds was spotted on the opening night red carpet with director Shawn Levy. Levy first directed Jackman in 2011’s Real Steel. Jackman then introduced the pair, who would go on to team up on Free Guy and the upcoming The Adam Project. In fact, all three would collaborate (albeit briefly) in Free Guy, in which Jackman provides a quick voice cameo.
Much like previous manifestations of their “rivalry,” Reynolds’ photo prank proves that the ribbing is all in good fun, with the Deadpool actor taking the time to see his friend bust out “Seventy-Six Trombones.” Furthermore, the pair doesn’t only fuel up the feud in the name of promotion. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have been known to reignite the bit in the name of charity and COVID relief efforts. That said, with Jackman and Reynolds’ dockets full, there are plenty of opportunities for future pranks, charitable or otherwise.
