In BOOM! Studios' New Comic GRIM, Death Was Never This Much Fun
In the new comic series GRIM from BOOM! Studios, death has never been so much fun. At least, that’s the viewpoint of the creative team as the book itself is teased as being a dark and brooding murder-mystery from beyond the grave.
GRIM will feature a creative team that are each more than familiar with the dark and edgy world in which this new series will take place. The comic will be written by Stephanie Phillips who is best known for DC Comics’ Harley Quinn and Wonder Woman. The artwork will be done by New Mutants’ Flaviano with Spider-Gwen’s Rico Renzi as colorist and The Joker’s Tom Napolitano as letterer. GRIM will also be available with a number of variant covers with one of them being done by Wonder Woman artist Jenny Frison, another by Thor’s Mike Del Mundo, and a third variant by Superman artist Dave Johnson with the main cover art coming from series artist Flaviano.
In a release from BOOM! Studios announcing the new series, GRIM writer Stephanie Phillips filled fans in on what to expect from the comic as well as offered some insight into the creative process. “Grim is dark and brooding and fixated on death … and also one of the most fun series I’ve ever written!” said Phillips. “With demons, reapers, departed souls, and Flaviano’s artwork, you’ll be dying to read more!” It seems as though this storyline will be as eye-popping as it will be intriguing, and the artist behind that creative vision also offered a few words ahead of the debut of BOOM! Studios' GRIM on the synergetic energy that is going into the book. “I love to draw new characters and share that excitement of creation with brilliant authors like Stephanie. She did an amazing job setting the groundwork for a character that you can’t help but love.”
GRIM will follow a character named Jessica Harrow, and in a cruel twist of fate, she is already dead before fans are even introduced to her. However, that doesn’t stop Jessica from going on the adventure of a lifetime (death-time?) as her story takes place in a ghoulish afterlife. Upon her death, Jessica was recruited as a Reaper and, as such, took on the role of bringing souls to the aftrerlife. Though, unlike the other Reapers, Jessica has no memory of how she died, or what/who was responsible for killing her. While working to unravel the mystery of her own potential murder, Jessica is forced to find out the answer to an even bigger question: Where is the original Grim Reaper?
The layered storytelling and creatively unique artwork are the foundation on which this deadly fun and wickedly awesome story will grow and assuredly thrive. GRIM #1 will be available in comic shops and on the BOOM! Studios webstore with digital copies available on a number of platforms including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Kindle in May 2022.
