Love is Blind Season 2: How the Show is Failing In Its Goal
Love is Blind's primary purpose is to show that an emotional connection is more important than a physical one. However, it seems to miss the point.
The Netflix reality hit Love is Blind aims to prove that an emotional attraction can override physical attraction, but it may not be achieving that goal. Last Friday, Netflix released the first five episodes of season 2. This season, 30 single men and women are trying to find love in a whole new way. For two weeks, they will rotate amongst pods to talk to each other. However, they can’t see each other, so they decide who to marry solely based on the emotional connections that they’ve created. Several fan favorites from season 1 are still together, which gives viewers hope for the new season.
The drama started early in the first episode. Similar to past Love is Blind contestants, including Jessica and Mark, there was a love feud between Shane Jansen, Shaina Hurley, and Natalie Lee. However, other contestants, including Danielle Ruhl and Nick Thompson, were ready to say, "I do." Despite the complications, six couples (which is quite a promising number) left the pods engaged and moved on to the honeymoon stage. Unfortunately, though, it appears that the show still isn't making its initial point.
This season features a wide variety of contestants, ranging from models like Giannina Gibelli to adrenaline junkies like Kyle Abrams. With the exception of a few women who showed off their curves, everyone was on the slim side. However, they all have one thing in common, which is the fact that they're attractive. No one had a disadvantage that might have hindered them in the regular dating scene. Theoretically, there was no risk for the Love is Blind contestants, and this proved true as the engaged couples ended up being attracted to each other.
Unfortunately, this takes tension away from the viewers. Even the unlikely couples, such as Natalie and Shayne, found themselves attracted to one another. There was no test of the couple’s boundaries on a physical level. With most contestants' looks fitting the physical mold of what the others are attracted to, Love is Blind failed to prove that it was necessary for an emotional attraction to override a physical one.
There are still several season 2 episodes left, which might prove that the physical connection is not as strong as viewers believed. At this point, it appears as though most of the couples still need to work on their emotional connections with one another. In the end, there is potential for the show to highlight the deep emotional bonds between cast members. Viewers want the best for these Love is Blind cast members, but many hope for a more diverse cast in future seasons.
