Thousands of London homes plunged into darkness by huge power cut
A massive power cut plunged parts of London and Hertfordshire into darkness tonight.
Thousands of homes across 38 postcodes were impacted by the outage.
It was feared the problem would last well into the night but electricity was restored ahead of schedule.
The issue was caused by a surge which triggered a fault with the underground power network.
Earlier, a National Grid spokesperson said: ‘We apologise for the disruption to consumers in North West London who have been disconnected this evening.
‘Some have already been reconnected and engineers are working hard to ensure that all consumers are reconnected as soon as possible.’
UK Power Network warned customers they could be without power until midnight but it was restored quickly.
A spokesperson said the problem was caused by ‘an underground electricity cable faulted on our high voltage network, causing an area wide power cut.’
A map of the area showed homes in Borehamwood, Stanmore, Kilburn and Harrow were all impacted.
One Twitter user shared video footage of a street in Wembley which was left in total darkness.
Others made the best of a bad situation and posted images of their candlelit dinners.
Mark Blank-Settle posted: ‘It might LOOK like we’re getting ready for a romantic meal but I’m fact we’ve got a POWER CUT. It’s like it’s 1974 all over again.’
