Tottenham Hotspur fans were treated to a frustrating 2-0 defeat at home to Wolves in the pouring rain this afternoon.
Let’s take look at the five things we learned:
Top four race
I always thought the top four was going to be a bit of a stretch. Tottenham don’t have the consistency needed to make that kind of push unless all three of their rivals are also remarkably up and down. Three losses on the bounce with Man City away to come seems to be a huge dent in Tottenham’s hopes unless they can turn a corner soon.
The new boys
Amidst the shocking defeat, there was a full debut for Rodrigo Bentancur and around 70 minutes for Dejan Kulusevski. Now, this is not saying much, but they were definitely two of Tottenham’s better players in both effort and quality. Kulusevski still looks a bit off the pace but he came close to scoring and put a big shift in. Bentancur was probably Tottenham’s most composed and positive midfielder too.
Harsh on Sess
Ryan Sessegnon was hooked after just 27 minutes when Spurs went 2-0 down. This was not a direct attack on his performance, but merely because Conte wanted to change formation. But seeing Sessegnon have to walk around the stadium in such embarrassing fashion was tough to watch. Hopefully, another opportunity comes his way soon.
Same old mistakes
I think the worst thing is that those errors probably would not have shocked most Spurs fans. Most of Tottenham’s goals conceded this season have come from individual blunders. Today, it was the turn of Hugo Lloris and Ben Davies. Unfortunately, in the Premier League, you can’t hand a good side a 2-0 head start and get anything out of the game. The Spurs players have a few months to improve or risk putting themselves in the shop window.
The Y-word
Before any of the goals went in today, it appeared that large sections of the crowd made their stance on the Y-word known, singing a number of chants back to back including the word. The club has asked people to stop, but it appears a large number are refusing.
