Morning Briefing: Spring Training Likely Delayed

0

Good morning, Mets fans!

Well, unfortunately it looks like we are all going to have to wait a little longer for spring training to start than we had hoped. MLBPA and the MLBPA met again on Saturday and once again little to no progress was made in the latest CBA negotiations. The players were reportedly unimpressed and gave “underwhelming” reactions to the latest offers from MLB. As the trend continues, so too does the lockout.

It’s not a good outlook for spring training as we stand right now. Clover Park in Port St. Lucie may stay empty until St. Lucie returns in April.

Latest MLB News

Mike Kurland of SK Playbook and Roto Baller looked at the top-10 hitters who improved their ISO from 2020 to 2021.

Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Los Angeles Dodgers have signed first baseman and outfielder Stefen Romero to a minor league contract, with an invite to major-league spring training.

Latest Updates on the MLB/MLBPA CBA Negotiations

According to Joon Lee of ESPN, the meeting between MLB and the MLBPA lasted less than an hour and ended with no deal in place. Lee went on to mention that the MLBPA came out of the meeting with MLB unimpressed by the offer from the league.

Evan Drellich of The Athletic also discussed the latest from the meetings, stating that the MLB made a large proposal on economics & “otherwise.” It included a pre-arbitration bonus pool that went up $5 million to $15 million. Drellich noted there were also slight increases to CBT thresholds and no changes to CBT tax rates.

Per Jesse Rogers of ESPN, the 130-page CBA also included eliminating the draft pick penalty for going over the first CBT threshold and small increases to the first threshold in years 3-5. Year five was $220 million, it is now $222 million.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported on twitter that anonymous reaction from “two players side people is that it’s ‘not as (terrible) as most expected.’”

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, as part of their proposal, MLB raised the minimum salary to $630,000 and the CBT to $222 million in 2026. The union’s latest proposal was a minimum salary of $775,000 and a $245 CBT beginning immediately.

Nightengale also went on to state that MLB’s proposal includes an increase of $23 million in signing bonuses and draft slots. He reported that spring training is very unlikely to start on time at this point.
