A homeless man allegedly slit the throat of a woman after she let him into her residence to take a shower.

Police responded to a report of a woman bleeding heavily just before 5pm on February 6 on the 800 block of South West Temple Street in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Paramedics took the woman, in critical condition, to a nearby hospital where she underwent an emergency surgery. After the procedure, she was in critical but stable condition.

The incident commander at the scene called Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) detectives to assist with the investigation. Detectives worked with the police department’s robbery squad and the crime lab and computer statistics and analysis unit to identify Eric Jones, 30, as the suspect.

Patrol officers found Jones early Friday near 130 South 500 East and arrested him.

‘During the investigation, the victim told SLCPD she let the suspect inside her residence so he could shower,’ the police department stated on Saturday.

‘The woman described the suspect as being homeless.’

Jones, charged with one count of aggravated assault, is being held at the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.

Salt Lake police are continuing to investigate the crime.

The incident occurred a week before a homeless man allegedly followed Christina Yuna Lee, 35, inside her apartment in Chinatown in New York City and stabbed her to death.

Surveillance footage showed a man identified by cops as Assamad Nash, 25, who had misdemeanor arrests in the past, catching the door behind Lee and walking behind her just before 4.30am on Sunday. Shortly after, a neighbor heard Lee screaming and called police.

Arriving officers found that Nash had barricaded himself inside the apartment on Chrystie Street. They broke in to find Lee dead in her bathtub and the suspect hiding under a bed.

The building’s landlord, Brian Chin, said based on surveillance cameras that the man ‘mercilessly stalked’ Lee up six flights of stairs before slipping into her unit.
