Former Dodgers scout Calvin Jones dies
Former Seattle Mariners reliever and Dodgers scout Calvin Jones died over the weekend. The 58-year-old Jones had suffered from cancer for some time.
The first overall pick in one phase of the 1984 draft (there were two phases at that time), Jones was a minor-league teammate of Ken Griffey Jr. and reached the majors with the Mariners in 1991. He made 65 appearances over the next two seasons, the extent of his major-league career.
Jones continued to pitch in the minor leagues and foreign leagues through 2002. He joined the Dodgers as a scout under scouting director Logan White and was responsible for scouting Texas. He was instrumental in the Dodgers drafting and signing three-time CY Young Award-winner Clayton Kershaw in 2006.
