Why Moon Knight Is Only Showing Two Characters In The Trailer
The Super Bowl provided a new Moon Knight trailer, but like its predecessors, it only showed two major characters, hinting at the secrets the show might be keeping. Moon Knight will be arriving on Disney+ on March 30, 2022. Despite the nearing release date, surprisingly little is known about the series with very few named characters confirmed and even less of them shown in trailers.
The Moon Knight super bowl trailer was only 30 seconds long but provided some new glimpses of the Moon Knight character and his equipment including a cape and his crescent-bladed boomerangs. However, only two characters are shown in the trailer. Moon Knight himself, also known as Marc Spector, and played by Oscar Isaac is the primary focus of the trailer. Ethan Hawke’s mysterious take on the presumably villainous Arthur Harrow also makes an appearance while providing some voiceover as well. This mimics previous trailers which only showed other incidental characters.
The primary reason why the Moon Knight trailers are only showing the two characters relates to the complex nature of Moon Knight. Marc Spector lives with dissociative identity disorder, and his alter Steven Grant is leading for much of the trailers who does not seem aware of this. As so much of the buildup for Moon Knight appears to be around Marc Spector reckoning with his alters and their actions, Moon Knight himself effectively presents multiple roles within the trailers.
A secondary reason why the Moon Knight trailers are showing so little in the way of other characters is likely tied to the wider MCU. Marvel has become renowned for editing their trailers in ways to mislead people and keep spoilers hidden and the other characters who are not being shown in the Moon Knight trailer might indicate Moon Knight’s future beyond his limited series. In the comics, Moon Knight joins a group called the Midnight Sons which also featured, at various points, Doctor Strange and Blade. As Blade was introduced in the post-credits scene of Eternals, and the Moon Knight series will release after Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, both characters might appear, but Disney and Marvel would want to keep that quiet until a big reveal can be made.
A possible Midnight Sons reveal could have much bigger implications for the MCU with many properties that were previously not canon being brought into the official Marvel Cinematic Universe through the multiverse. While Doctor Strange and Blade are already within the MCU, there are a lot of other characters who have previously appeared in Marvel adaptations who could now make their MCU debuts as part of the Moon Knight TV series. These include Ghost Rider, Black Cat (who was mentioned in The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Iron Fist, Punisher, and even Morbius who is being introduced by Sony’s adaptations. So while the Moon Knight trailers are focusing on only two characters, this is likely to keep some reveals secret that could be as big as Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin appearing in Hawkeye.
