The Richmond teen skated her way into Thursday’s free skate with her short performance on Tuesday night, scoring 69.5 to place eighth in that contest, according to Olympics.com.
Liu, who has previously nailed a triple Axel, opted for a double Axel in her opening. She followed that up with a triple flip and triple Lutz/triple toe-loop in combination in her skate, set to “Gypsy Dance.”

“I’m really happy with how I skated,” the 16-year-old Liu told Olympics.com. “No matter how I did, I was going to be happy. I’m really glad that I went for all my jumps and I didn’t fall.”
As the New York Times put it: Nobody is having more fun here than Alysa Liu.
Karen Chen, Liu’s teammate and a fellow Bay Area native, finished 13th and also advances to the free skate. She completed a triple-triple combo but fell on her final jump, a triple loop, and scored a 64.11.

The standout American-born freestyle skier who represents China finished runner-up with her last run of the Olympic women’s slopestyle contest on Tuesday, Associated Press reported.

Kamila Valieva skates into first place after Olympic short program
The heavily favored 15-year-old dynamo at the center of the latest Olympic doping scandal overcame an early mistake to lead after the women’s short program at the Beijing Games on Tuesday night, AP reported.
Arthur Liu, the father of Valieva’s competitor Alysa Liu, denounced the decision to allow Valieva to compete.
“She tested positive for a banned drug. What’s not clear about it? She should be out. That is as simple as that. What kind of message are they sending to millions of young boys and girls in sports — particularly figure skaters? That cheaters are allowed to compete in the Olympics, the holiest competition on the planet. It totally destroys the Olympic spirit.”
