BioShock Movie Happening At Netflix | Screen Rant

0

BioShock movie is in the works at Netflix. Video game movies have long been viewed as a cursed genre in Hollywood, as many high-profile games have failed to deliver acceptable adaptations. However, the number of success stories means various studios continue to try and bring some popular titles to life in a new way. Recent years have seen UnchartedSonic the HedgehogTomb Raider, and Mortal Kombat all get movie adaptations, and there are plenty of other video game movies in various stages of development.

There has long been interest in Hollywood in bringing BioShock to the big screen. Universal began developing a movie based on the 2007 first-person shooter from 2K Games and Take-Two over a decade ago. The BioShock movie courted Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski at one point, but he eventually left the passion project due to various roadblocks. Universal later found Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) to take over, but he also exited the BioShock movie eventually. It led to Universal and 2K Games scrapping plans entirely for the live-action adaptation.

Now, BioShock is getting another chance to become a major movie franchise. Netflix has announced that it has partnered with Take-Two Interactive and 2K to develop a new BioShock movie. The new film adaptation does not have any writers, directors, or cast members attached, nor does it have a release date. It also is not confirmed if Netflix's BioShock movie will be live-action or animated.

The BioShock video game franchise takes place in the 1960s, with the underwater city of Rapture serving as the main location for the games. The main character is a man named Jack, who crashlands near Rapture and discovers the war-torn utopia. Jack then fights to escape the city, leading to battles with people enhanced with superpowers and the iconic Big Daddies. Following the acclaimed release of the first game in 2007, 2K turned BioShock into a franchise with 2010's BioShock 2 and 2013's BioShock Infinite.

It is understandable why Netflix would be interested in bringing a BioShock movie adaptation to its hundreds of millions of subscribers. The video game franchise is incredibly popular and a major piece of IP that can attract even more people to subscribe down the road. Of course, BioShock won't be a cheap property to adapt, so hopefully Netflix doesn't cut any corners in bringing the franchise's unique look and Big Daddies to the screen. Now fans of the games will just have to hope the project doesn't take too long to materialize.
