Elden Ring Reveals Confessor & Samurai Classes Ahead of Game's Launch
The highly anticipated upcoming FromSoftware game Elden Ring will have two additional unique classes, according to a recent official Tweet. FromSoftware has already made it clear that classes will exist in their soon-to-be-released high fantasy action RPG, though the lines between them will not be drawn in ink. In other words, class designations in Elden Ring will be similar to the Dark Souls games in that they will be flexible, not forcing players to stick with one playstyle throughout the entirety of the game.
There have been very few games in recent memory that are as hyped up as Elden Ring. The latest from revered Japanese developer FromSoftware aims to pivot back to the epic fantasy roots planted with games like Dark Souls and Demon's Souls, the studio branched out a bit from these more traditional fantasy staples with games like Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The former of those two games was a dark, gothic, Lovecraftian nightmare while the latter was a loose adaptation of traditional Japanese mythical tropes and iconography. If the promotional material for Elden Ring is to be trusted, it looks like the team is revisiting some of the classic fantasy icons, including knights, wizards, sorcerers, and dragons, albeit with some ghoulish twists characteristic of FromSoftware's approach to lore and visual design.
The official Elden Ring Twitter account cracked open the door on classes earlier today with the reveal of the Confessor and Samurai. According to the tweet, the Confessor is a sort of holy battlemage, utilizing both traditional weaponry and magic to take down their foes. The Samurai class, as described, seems a bit more traditional, as individuals who choose this path will have a higher proficiency with katanas and bows.
Fans of FromSoftware might make an obvious connection between the Samurai class and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. In fact, many players feel that the studio nearly perfected katana gameplay with that release, so the inclusion of a Samurai class in Elden Ring is certain to excite some players. The gameplay footage for Elden Ring is a bit more reminiscent of Dark Souls than Sekiro, so it is hard to tell exactly what Samurai combat will feel like.
FromSoftware's Tweet, while sparse, also gives a little bit more insight into the lore of Elden Ring. Knowing that both samurai and spiritual warriors exist within this world certainly adds more color and depth to this collaborative effort between George R.R. Martin and FromSoftware. Whether these opposing mythologies will combine smoothly or clash will ultimately be revealed when Elden Ring finally comes out.
Elden Ring will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on February 25, 2022.
