10 DC Characters Andrew Garfield Could Play, According To Reddit

Andrew Garfield has had some major career accomplishments in the past year, being a part of the huge box office success of Spiderman: No Way Home and receiving his second Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in Tick, Tick... BOOM!

With the recent burst in popularity, the DC Fandom took to Reddit, led by user Terry___Mcginnis to discuss which popular characters they'd like to see him play. Options for Garfield ranged between villains, heroes, and antiheroes, but what were the most interesting possibilities?

Despite its cancellation after only one season, Swamp Thing was popular among DC fans and many are yearning for a new adaptation in the DCEU. A comic book film in the horror genre could be an interesting addition to the universe.

The Redditor who suggested this, UxasIS, says "I’d want something very different, I dislike typecasting," suggesting that Garfield may not be the first in mind for the role, but would definitely have the capabilities. The combination of a non-typecast in a character new to most mainstream audiences could make for an intriguing project.

A Batman rogue seems like a solid choice for the actor who isn't looking to commit to a long-term role. He's already played a superhero, and may want to try something new. If that's the case, a villain may be the best option for the Oscar nominee. This appearance could happen opposite to Pattinson's Batman, or even Leslie Grace's Batgirl in the DCEU.

To respond to the comment with this suggestion, Redditor World_in_my_eyes says "I didn’t know I needed this to happen, but now I do." Garfield isn't the typical option anyone would imagine in the Two-Face role, but it is certainly intriguing. Two-Face is one of the most dangerous crime lords in DC Comics, and it'd be interesting to see him resurface in the movies.

Matt Ryan has been playing Constantine for quite some time, both on Constantine and Legends of Tomorrow, as well as in animated films, so many envision his face when thinking of a live-action version of the role. Garfield, another British actor, seems appropriate to replace him. Constantine is one of the most powerful magic users in DC.

Redditor MeMeTiger_ says "If Matt Ryan ever stops playing the character and we need a DCEU Constantine, I want Andrew Garfield too," confirming their support for the character. This would be a chance for the actor to take on some interesting acting, since he would have to take on a darker and more cynical character than he might be used to.

Nightwing and Spider-Man seems like an easy comparison to make between DC and Marvel characters. Both are athletic, mobile heroes with great melee fighting skills and are often portrayed as youthful compared to their hero colleagues. Both are leaders in their own right, however.

Perhaps with the Battinson-verse just beginning, a Dick Grayson could be casted eventually. User Rebirthknight52 describes "the back and forth head butting with Batman will have a lot of great emotions that Andrew can give us."

The first stretchy character on this list is known for his witty humor and less dramatic approach to crime fighting than say, Batman. If Garfield wanted to take on another hero with a similarly light-hearted manner as Spider-Man, Elongated Man could be the way to go.

Redditor Catman_Begins says "Elongated Man just came to my mind somehow," to much agreement. Elongated Man seems like an opportunity for a great action comedy movie, and Garfield has what it takes to make it work.

While a Blue Beetle project starring Xolo Maridueña is already underway, set to release on HBO Max in 2023, he would be playing the Jaime Reyes version of the character. Commenters who had Blue Beetle in mind were considering Garfield for the Ted Kord version. This could work well, as Andrew could take a one-off, supporting role for the film.

Fan TheMasterXan referenced No Way Home, saying "A former Spider Man mentoring a character you could say is similar to Spider Man due to being a teenaged superhero with a bug based moniker." Meaning that he would do well in a mentor role to Jaime. Blue Beetle is still one of many DC characters lacking a strong on-screen adaptation.

One of the most popular Green Lanterns, fans are hoping he'll make an appearance in the planned Green Lantern Corps movie or show, if it ever gets out of production limbo. Redditor mazzucac says "Kyle Rayner. Please. That would rule."

Rayner is typically the most reserved of the Lanterns. He isn't as forward as Hal Jordan or Guy Gardner, and Garfield's reputation for being a laid back, nice guy could make him a great fit for the role.

If DC ever follows up on their New Gods project that got lost in production limbo, Garfield taking the lead as Mister Miracle could be a perfect fit. Redditor AvatarBoomi says "I really love Tom Kings Mister Miracle series. I’ve thought long and hard about it, never would’ve imagined Andrew Garfield as MM but he would be perfect if they did it like Tom King."

Tom King's recent Miter Miracle run was a huge hit, so it's no surprise that he's who fans have in mind when considering a film adaptation, especially when King was going to be involved in the project. This complex version of the character could be a real challenge for an actor such as Garfield.

The second stretchy metahuman for Andrew would be Plastic Man. The characters are very similar, so the reasons remain the same. To add, Plastic Man is a very intelligent detective, on top of being a highly powerful metahuman.

Fan WhiplashDynamo jokes "I have 3 choices. 1. Plastic Man. 2. Plastic Man 3. Plastic Man." The hero seems like a great option for an absurd, weird, comedy movie that really bends the genre, and could be an interesting project for Andrew to take on.

Barry Allen is a very similar in some ways to Spider-Man, so it's no surprise that The Flash was the most selected character for Garfield to play. His compassion for his villains and quick-witted humor make The Flash a common comparison to Spidey. With Ezra Miller's The Flash coming later this year, it's unlikely we'll be seeing Garfield anytime soon. But who knows what decisions DC will be making after some sort of Flashpoint.

Reddit user DarkestKnight0 says "He would've made an excellent Barry Allen." Despite not being blonde, Garfield has the ability to embody the personality to make The Flash who he is.
