Encanto Art Imagines The Sweet Story of How Mirabel’s Parents Met

0

Adorable Encanto fan art imagines a sweet backstory for how Mirabel's parents, Julieta and Agustín, met for the first time. Since its theatrical debut last November, Disney's Encanto has become the textbook definition of a breakout hit. The colorful tale was greeted with positive reviews and solid box office numbers when it arrived in theaters, only to receive even more attention upon premiering on Disney+ in December. Encanto has become the subject of countless fanworks since then as its fandom grows to truly impressive heights; from parody TikToks to beautifully rendered fan art, Encanto is the movie of the moment.

Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, and co-directed by Charise Castro Smith, Encanto tells the story of the magical Madrigals and their enchanted home. The Madrigal casita has the ability to bless each member of the family with a special gift on their fifth birthday, yet for some unknown reason, it left bright-eyed Mirabel without one. Now 15 years old, Mirabel struggles to find her place within her gifted family, especially when the casita's magic starts to lose its power.

Encanto's large ensemble means fans have a wide variety of characters to pick from when it comes to creating new works, and it's understated but wholesome couple Julieta and Agustín who get the spotlight in new art created by Rachel Hoo. The skillfully drawn comic imagines how the accident-prone Agustín met a young Julieta Madrigal, and the result is an adorable meet-cute that deserves its own movie. Check it out below.

In Encanto, Julieta and Agustín's story primarily revolves around Mirabel's as they both encourage and support her in their own ways. They don't get much time for themselves. Nevertheless, even with just a few onscreen moments together, Julieta and Agustín clearly have a compelling dynamic. As someone who married into the Madrigal family, Agustín doesn't have a gift of his own, yet he doesn't seem bothered by that. Instead, he's fiercely proud of all Julieta can do. It helps that her own gift - the ability to heal people with her cooking - suits him incredibly well, since he's constantly hurting himself in some accident or another.

The Encanto fan comic is a perfect example of the best aspects of fandom. Hoo took two supporting characters with little known backstory and created a wonderful, believable tale about them both. With Encanto now possibly becoming a Disney franchise, there will likely be more exploration of these characters onscreen in the future. Until that happens, though, the fans are free to develop their own idea about what the Encanto characters were up to before the movie began. This kind of creativity is really special, and hopefully it won't fade any time soon.
