[Softball] Softball Falcons split a pair vs. Hastings

0

Hesston, Kan. – The Friends University Softball Falcons defeated the Hastings College Broncos on the run rule by a score of 10-2 in the opening tilt, but the Broncos bounced back to win the second game 6-2 today (Feb. 20) at Bess Mullet Field in Hesston, Kan.

After Mattie Hogrefe doubled home Elana Gerhard to cap a two-run first inning for Hastings, the Falcon bats went to work.

Priscilla Mora (FR/Beaumont, Calif. ) drove in the first of her three runs in the first game with a single that scored Aleigha Gale (SO/Winfield, Kan. ) for the Falcons' first run.  Gale started the frame with a walk and stole both second and third base to be in position to score on Mora's base hit.

Mora then singled home both Hannah Lang (SR/Topeka, Kan. ) and Laila Spracklen (JR/San Diego, Calif. ) to give the Falcons a lead they would continue expanding.

The fourth inning saw the flood gates open for the Falcons, as a two-run double by Carolyn Dallimore (JR/Patterson, Calif. ) and an RBI double from Vanessa Sigala (SO/Carson, Calif. ) powered a six-run inning. Jennifer Garcia (SO/Sylamar, Calif. ) also singled in pinch runner Tatum Haney (JR/Derby, Kan. ) in the frame that saw the Falcons take a commanding 9-2 lead over the Broncos.

Dallimore then gave the Falcons a walk-off run-rule victory with a double that scored Mora in the fifth inning.

Spracklen held the Broncos scoreless over the final four innings and struck out four in the winning effort.

Dallimore and Mora each had three hits and drove in three runs, while Gale, Mitchell and Spracklen each had a pair of hits.

In the second game, 10 errors doomed the Falcons as all six runs the Broncos tallied were unearned against Isabelle Schwien (SO/Denver, Colo. ).

The Broncos opened the game by capitalizing on four Falcon miscues to score three runs in the first inning.

It was again Dallimore coming through for the Falcons (2-4) with another RBI double that scored Mitchell in the bottom of the inning to put Friends on the board.

The score remained 3-1 until three more Falcon errors in the fourth aided a two-run inning for Hastings as Hogrefe doubled in another run to finish the frame and give the Broncos a four-run lead.

Garcia doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth and scored on an RBI single by Lacee Travens (JR/Reno, Nev. ) for the Falcons' second run, but the Broncos answered with another tally in the fifth to finish things off.

Schwien struck out four and walked two in her seven inning complete game effort.

Hogrefe started and lasted four innings for the Broncos (2-8), giving up two runs to get the win. Kyleigh Boever shut out the Falcons over the final three innings with a pair of strikeouts to pick up the save.

The Falcons are back it tomorrow at their normal home vs. MidAmerica Nazarene University starting at 1:30 pm at Two Rivers Youth Complex.
