Encanto’s Luisa Madrigal Unites With Captain Carter in MCU Crossover Art
Encanto's Luisa Madrigal and the MCU's Captain Carter are teaming up in new crossover art. Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, Disney's latest animated feature film tells the story of a multigenerational Colombian family, most of whom possess magical gifts from a miracle that enables them to best serve the people of their community. However, when the family's magic begins to disappear, 15-year-old Mirabel, who does not have a special power, makes it her mission to find out what is happening. Released first in theaters and then on Disney+, Encanto quickly gained commercial success, and its soundtrack, featuring songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, grabbed the number-one spot on the US Billboard 200, with multiples songs sparking trends across social media platforms.
The character of Luisa is a notable fan-favorite, in large part because of her song "Surface Pressure." Voiced by Jessica Darrow, the nineteen-year-old older sister of Mirabel has been blessed with the gift of superhuman strength, but finds herself carrying a tremendous burden and is worried about letting her family down. She admits her fears through her song, thus showing audiences just how mentally strong she can be as well, another reason so many people resonate with her. She plays an important role in her family, and Miranda revealed the inspiration behind "Surface Pressure" as being his own sister, crediting her for carrying the pressures attached with being the oldest and apologizing for the tougher hand she was dealt in their childhood.
In a new crossover drawing posted on Instagram by artist Rachel Hoo, Luisa can be seen standing next to Marvel's Captain Carter, dressed in armor and wielding a shield of her own. The art reads, "Get This Woman a Shield" and highlights the two characters as being powerful women, possessing both beauty and strength. In the caption, Hoo writes that Luisa is relatable and that it was inspiring to watch her character's arc, calling her "hero quality." Check out the artwork below:
The character of Peggy Carter will likely return to the MCU following her appearance in the Disney+ series What If...?, given the Easter egg of her shield in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness poster. Her appearance in the show finally gave fans of the character a version in which she was presented as an independent female super-hero. The ABC series, Agent Carter, did a better job for many in showing her capabilities, but it wasn't until What If...? that the character had been portrayed as a full-fledged superhero in her own right.
It is a compelling idea to place Luisa and Captain Carter together side by side, and the two do share many of the same characteristics. There is a reason Luisa is an Encanto fan-favorite - like Carter, she is a strong, powerful woman, but with that identity can come pressures, both internal and external, and judgement. The crossover art serves as a great example of the duality of these characters, and as Encanto continues to remain popular among audiences, Luisa will surely be seen as a role model by many.
