Alexander Skarsgård Wears A Wolf’s Head in The Northman Movie Images

0

Alexander Skarsgård wears a wolf's head in new images from Robert Eggers' The Northman. Eggers’ follow up to The Lighthouse also stars Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Gustav Lindh and Björk.

That all-star cast has assembled to tell a tale described as an epic revenge story “that explores how far a Viking prince will go to seek justice for his murdered father.” A previously released The Northman trailer indeed previewed the film’s blood-soaked revenge story while giving audiences a taste of Eggers’ meticulous attention to period detail. The film is in fact so detailed that the entire experience of filming became completely exhausting according to Prince Amleth actor Skarsgård, who in a recent interview detailed Eggers’ excruciating methods but also referred to the Lighthouse director as a “genius.”

All that exhausting effort seems to have been definitely been worth it if early glimpses of The Northman are any indication. Following upon some previously seen images as well as that trailer, IGN has shared four more pictures from the film, including one featuring Skarsgård wearing a head-dress made out of the head of a wolf. The intriguing new image release also gives audiences a look at Hawke as the character of King Aurvandill, a figure from Viking mythology who makes his way into Eggers’ historically detailed film. Another grim-looking image shows a character who appears to be some kind of shaman or wizard holding a horrifying shrunken head as part of an apparent ceremony.

Of course traveling backward in time to explore strange corners of human history is nothing new for Eggers whose debut feature The Witch told a horror story set in 1630s New England. But The Northman sees the writer-director delving into an even more mist-shrouded and distant historical period, and this time the result figures to be a lot bloodier and more violent than Eggers’ previous films. Indeed another of the new images shows a warrior decked out in medieval armor, yet another indication of Eggers’ intentions. Battle scenes in fact were a big part of why Skarsgård talked about the shoot being exhausting, as the director insisted on doing long takes that often had to be started over due to simple things like horses going the wrong way in the background.

All that uncompromisingly rigorous attention to detail has of course helped Eggers establish himself as one of the more exciting directors working in movies today, a fact that’s reflected in the list of big-name actors he’s gotten together to star in his epic Viking revenge film. Audiences will get to see for themselves how Eggers and company bring to life the dim and distant past when The Northman releases on April 22, 2022.
